एतच् छ्रुत्वा ततो राजा धृष्टद्युम्नं महारथम् ॥
अब्रवीत् समितौ तस्यां वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतः ॥
धृष्टद्युम्न निबोधेदं यत् त्वा वक्ष्यामि मारिष ॥
नातिक्रम्यं भवेत् तच् च वचनं मम भाषितम् ॥
भवान् सेनापतिर् मह्यं वासुदेवेन संमतः ॥
कार्त्तिकेयो यथा नित्यं देवानाम् अभवत् पुरा ॥
तथा त्वम् अपि पाण्डूनां सेनानीः पुरुषर्षभ ॥
स त्वं पुरुषशार्दूल विक्रम्य जहि कौरवान् ॥
अहं च त्वानुयास्यामि भीमः कृष्णश् च मारिष ॥
माद्रीपुत्रौ च सहितौ द्रौपदेयाश् च दंशिताः ॥
ये चान्ये पृथिवीपालाः प्रधानाः पुरुषर्षभ ॥
etac chrutvā tato rājā dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ mahāratham ||
abravīt samitau tasyāṃ vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ ||
dhṛṣṭadyumna nibodhedaṃ yat tvā vakṣyāmi māriṣa ||
nātikramyaṃ bhavet tac ca vacanaṃ mama bhāṣitam ||
bhavān senāpatir mahyaṃ vāsudevena saṃmataḥ ||
kārttikeyo yathā nityaṃ devānām abhavat purā ||
tathā tvam api pāṇḍūnāṃ senānīḥ puruṣarṣabha ||
sa tvaṃ puruṣaśārdūla vikramya jahi kauravān ||
ahaṃ ca tvānuyāsyāmi bhīmaḥ kṛṣṇaś ca māriṣa ||
mādrīputrau ca sahitau draupadeyāś ca daṃśitāḥ ||
ye cānye pṛthivīpālāḥ pradhānāḥ puruṣarṣabha ||
Having heard this, the king then said to Dhrishtadyumna, the great chariot-warrior, in that assembly, while Vasudeva listened: 'Dhrishtadyumna, hear what I am about to tell you, O worthy one, and let this word of mine not be transgressed. You, approved by Vasudeva, are my commander, as Karttikeya was once forever the commander of the gods; so you too, O best of men, be the leader of the army of the sons of Pandu. Therefore, tiger among men, show your valor and slay the Kauravas. I shall follow you, and so will Bhima and Krishna, O worthy one, the two sons of Madri together, the armed sons of Draupadi, and whatever other foremost lords of the earth, O best of men.'
