संजय उवाच
प्रभातायां तु शर्वर्यां भीष्मः शांतनवस् ततः ॥
अनीकान्य् अनुसंयाने व्यादिदेशाथ भारत ॥
गारुडं च महाव्यूहं चक्रे शांतनवस् तदा ॥
पुत्राणां ते जयाकाङ्क्षी भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः ॥
गरुडस्य स्वयं तुण्डे पिता देवव्रतस् तव ॥
चक्षुषी च भरद्वाजः कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः ॥
अश्वत्थामा कृपश् चैव शीर्षम् आस्तां यशस्विनौ ॥
त्रिगर्तैर् मत्स्यकैकेयैर् वाटधानैश् च संयुतौ ॥
भूरिश्रवाः शलः शल्यो भगदत्तश् च मारिष ॥
मद्रकाः सिन्धुसौवीरास् तथा पञ्चनदाश् च ये ॥
जयद्रथेन सहिता ग्रीवायां संनिवेशिताः ॥
पृष्ठे दुर्योधनो राजा सोदरैः सानुगैर् वृतः ॥
विन्दानुविन्दाव् आवन्त्यौ काम्बोजश् च शकैः सह ॥
पुच्छम् आसन् महाराज शूरसेनाश् च सर्वशः ॥
मागधाश् च कलिङ्गाश् च दाशेरकगणैः सह ॥
दक्षिणं पक्षम् आसाद्य स्थिता व्यूहस्य दंशिताः ॥
काननाश् च विकुञ्जाश् च मुक्ताः पुण्ड्राविषस् तथा ॥
बृहद्बलेन सहिता वामं पक्षम् उपाश्रिताः ॥

putrāṇāṃ te jayākāṅkṣī bhīṣmaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ ||
garuḍasya svayaṃ tuṇḍe pitā devavratas tava ||
cakṣuṣī ca bharadvājaḥ kṛtavarmā ca sātvataḥ ||
aśvatthāmā kṛpaś caiva śīrṣam āstāṃ yaśasvinau ||
trigartair matsyakaikeyair vāṭadhānaiś ca saṃyutau ||
bhūriśravāḥ śalaḥ śalyo bhagadattaś ca māriṣa ||
madrakāḥ sindhusauvīrās tathā pañcanadāś ca ye ||
jayadrathena sahitā grīvāyāṃ saṃniveśitāḥ ||
pṛṣṭhe duryodhano rājā sodaraiḥ sānugair vṛtaḥ ||
vindānuvindāv āvantyau kāmbojaś ca śakaiḥ saha ||
puccham āsan mahārāja śūrasenāś ca sarvaśaḥ ||
māgadhāś ca kaliṅgāś ca dāśerakagaṇaiḥ saha ||
dakṣiṇaṃ pakṣam āsādya sthitā vyūhasya daṃśitāḥ ||
kānanāś ca vikuñjāś ca muktāḥ puṇḍrāviṣas tathā ||
bṛhadbalena sahitā vāmaṃ pakṣam upāśritāḥ ||
Sanjaya said: 'When night gave way to dawn, O Bharata, Bhishma, son of Shantanu, arrayed the troops for the advance. Desiring victory for your sons, Bhishma, forefather of the Kurus, then formed the great Garuda array. In the beak of Garuda stood your own father, Devavrata; the eyes were Bharadvaja and the Satvata Kritavarman. The illustrious Ashvatthaman and Kripa, together with the Trigartas, Matsyas, Kekayas and Vatadhanas, stood at the head. Bhurishravas, Shala, Shalya, Bhagadatta, the Madrakas, the Sindhu-Sauviras and the peoples of the Five Rivers together with Jayadratha were placed at the neck, O venerable one. At the back stood King Duryodhana, surrounded by his brothers and retinue. The Avantyas Vinda and Anuvinda, the Kambojas with the Shakas and all the Shurasenas, O great king, formed the tail. The Magadhas, Kalingas and the divisions of the Dasherakas, armed, took up the right wing of the array; the Kananas, Vikunjas, Muktas, Pundras, Avishas and the warriors of Brihadbala took up the left wing.'
