तं दृष्ट्वा युयुधानस्य सुता दश महाबलाः ॥
महारथाः समाख्याताश् चित्रवर्मायुधध्वजाः ॥
समासाद्य महेष्वासं भूरिश्रवसम् आहवे ॥
ऊचुः सर्वे सुसंरब्धा यूपकेतुं महारणे ॥
भो भो कौरवदायाद सहास्माभिर् महाबल ॥
एहि युध्यस्व संग्रामे समस्तैः पृथग् एव वा ॥
अस्मान् वा त्वं पराजित्य यशः प्राप्नुहि संयुगे ॥
वयं वा त्वां पराजित्य प्रीतिं दास्यामहे पितुः ॥
एवम् उक्तस् तदा शूरैस् तान् उवाच महाबलः ॥
वीर्यश्लाघी नरश्रेष्ठस् तान् दृष्ट्वा समुपस्थितान् ॥
साध्व् इदं कथ्यते वीरा यद् एवं मतिर् अद्य वः ॥
युध्यध्वं सहिता यत्ता निहनिष्यामि वो रणे ॥
एवम् उक्ता महेष्वासास् ते वीराः क्षिप्रकारिणः ॥
महता शरवर्षेण अभ्यवर्षन्न् अरिंदमम् ॥
अपराह्णे महाराज संग्रामस् तुमुलो ऽभवत् ॥
एकस्य च बहूनां च समेतानां रणाजिरे ॥
तम् एकं रथिनां श्रेष्ठं शरवर्षैर् अवाकिरन् ॥
प्रावृषीव महाशैलं सिषिचुर् जलदा नृप ॥
तैस् तु मुक्ताञ् शरौघांस् तान् यमदण्डाशनिप्रभान् ॥
असंप्राप्तान् असंप्राप्तांश् चिच्छेदाशु महारथः ॥
तत्राद्भुतम् अपश्याम सौमदत्तेः पराक्रमम् ॥
यद् एको बहुभिर् युद्धे समसज्जद् अभीतवत् ॥
विसृज्य शरवृष्टिं तां दश राजन् महारथाः ॥
परिवार्य महाबाहुं निहन्तुम् उपचक्रमुः ॥
सौमदत्तिस् ततः क्रुद्धस् तेषां चापानि भारत ॥
चिच्छेद दशभिर् बाणैर् निमेषेण महारथः ॥
अथैषां छिन्नधनुषां भल्लैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥
चिच्छेद समरे राजञ् शिरांसि निशितैः शरैः ॥
ते हता न्यपतन् भूमौ वज्रभग्ना इव द्रुमाः ॥

samāsādya maheṣvāsaṃ bhūriśravasam āhave ||

bho bho kauravadāyāda sahāsmābhir mahābala ||
ehi yudhyasva saṃgrāme samastaiḥ pṛthag eva vā ||
asmān vā tvaṃ parājitya yaśaḥ prāpnuhi saṃyuge ||
vayaṃ vā tvāṃ parājitya prītiṃ dāsyāmahe pituḥ ||
evam uktas tadā śūrais tān uvāca mahābalaḥ ||
vīryaślāghī naraśreṣṭhas tān dṛṣṭvā samupasthitān ||
sādhv idaṃ kathyate vīrā yad evaṃ matir adya vaḥ ||
yudhyadhvaṃ sahitā yattā nihaniṣyāmi vo raṇe ||
evam uktā maheṣvāsās te vīrāḥ kṣiprakāriṇaḥ ||
mahatā śaravarṣeṇa abhyavarṣann ariṃdamam ||
aparāhṇe mahārāja saṃgrāmas tumulo 'bhavat ||
ekasya ca bahūnāṃ ca sametānāṃ raṇājire ||
tam ekaṃ rathināṃ śreṣṭhaṃ śaravarṣair avākiran ||
prāvṛṣīva mahāśailaṃ siṣicur jaladā nṛpa ||
tais tu muktāñ śaraughāṃs tān yamadaṇḍāśaniprabhān ||
asaṃprāptān asaṃprāptāṃś cicchedāśu mahārathaḥ ||
tatrādbhutam apaśyāma saumadatteḥ parākramam ||
yad eko bahubhir yuddhe samasajjad abhītavat ||
visṛjya śaravṛṣṭiṃ tāṃ daśa rājan mahārathāḥ ||
parivārya mahābāhuṃ nihantum upacakramuḥ ||
saumadattis tataḥ kruddhas teṣāṃ cāpāni bhārata ||
ciccheda daśabhir bāṇair nimeṣeṇa mahārathaḥ ||
athaiṣāṃ chinnadhanuṣāṃ bhallaiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ||
ciccheda samare rājañ śirāṃsi niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
te hatā nyapatan bhūmau vajrabhagnā iva drumāḥ ||
Seeing this, the ten mighty sons of Yuyudhana, renowned as maharathas, arrayed in colorful armor, weapons, and banners, drew near the great bowman Bhurishravas in battle. All of them, greatly enraged, spoke to Yupaketu in the great fight: "Hey there, heir of the Kauravas, mighty one! Come, fight us in battle — either against all of us together or against each one separately. If you defeat us, win glory in the fight; or if we defeat you, we shall gladden our father." Thus addressed by these heroes, the mighty one, proud in his valor and foremost among men, looked upon them standing before him and said: "Well said, heroes, since such is your resolve today. Fight together, prepared as one; I shall slay you in this battle." So addressed, those great bowmen, heroes swift in action, poured a mighty rain of arrows upon the subduer of foes. In the afternoon, O great king, a tumultuous battle broke out on the field, one man against many gathered together. They covered that one, the finest of charioteers, with showers of arrows, as rain-clouds in the monsoon season drench a great mountain, O king. But the great charioteer swiftly cut down the streams of arrows they loosed, shining like the staff of Yama and like lightning, before they could even reach him. There we beheld a marvel — the valor of Saumadatti: alone, he engaged fearlessly against many in that battle. Having spent that shower of arrows, the ten great charioteers, O king, surrounded the mighty-armed hero and set about to kill him. Then Saumadatti, enraged, in a single instant cut down their bows with ten arrows, O Bharata, being himself a great charioteer. Then, their bows now cut away, he severed their heads in battle, O king, with sharp, broad-headed arrows of even joints. Slain, they fell to the ground like trees shattered by the thunderbolt."
