"Bibhatsu, having steadied himself in battle with the highest astras, will cast aside the other warriors and attack the grandsire. My hair stands on end, and my heart grows faint, O mighty-armed one, as I think of the meeting of Bhishma and Arjuna. Partha, having placed in front of him in battle this cunning Panchala of wicked mind, goes to fight Bhishma. But Bhishma once said: 'I will not slay Shikhandin: he was made a woman by the Creator, and by fate became a man again.' This Yajnaseni, the maharatha, bears an inauspicious sign, and the son of the river will not strike one who carries such an ill-omened banner. As I ponder this, my mind grows very faint. This very day, in battle, Partha will assail the elder of the Kurus. The wrath of Yudhishthira, the clash of Bhishma and Arjuna, and my own rousing of weapons are a sure sign of calamity for the people. The Pandava is wise, strong, and heroic; he has mastered his weapons, is firm in valor, strikes from afar, is steady with his arrows, and knows the omens. He is unconquerable in battle even by the gods with Vasava; he is mighty, intelligent, has overcome all hardship, and is the foremost among warriors. The Pandava is ever victorious in battle and wields fearsome astras. Therefore, avoiding his path, go quickly to Bhishma, who is firm in his vow."

Drona sees clearly how this day works: Shikhandin strips Bhishma of the power to answer him, while Arjuna has the strength to carry the design through to its end. His counsel to his son is wary, because he acknowledges Partha's real superiority.
