Sanjaya said: 'In the fight, Arjuna showered the striving maharatha Shalya with curved arrows. He pierced Susharman and Kripa, each with three arrows; likewise in the battle he struck the lord of Pragjyotisha, Bhagadatta, Saindhava Jayadratha, Chitrasena, Vikarna, Kritavarman, Durmarshana, O king of kings, and the two maharathas of Avanti. This atiratha, pressing hard upon your army, struck each of them in battle with three arrows fledged with heron and peacock feathers. Jayadratha, standing on Chitrasena's chariot, first pierced Partha with arrows, O Bharata, and then swiftly struck Bhima. Shalya in the fight, and Kripa, foremost among chariot-warriors, pierced the mighty-armed Jishnu with many deadly arrows. Chitrasena and your other sons, O lord of peoples, quickly struck Arjuna and Bhimasena in battle, each with five sharp arrows. But there the two Kaunteyas, bulls among the Bharatas, best among chariot-warriors, began to press hard upon the great force of the Trigartas in the fight. Susharman, having wounded Partha with a mass of iron arrows, let out a mighty roar, filling the heavens with sound. And other valiant chariot-warriors pierced Bhimasena and Dhananjaya with straight, gold-feathered arrows. Yet among these chariot-warriors the two Kaunteyas, the finest of warriors, shone with wondrous splendor, as if sporting upon their noble chariots, like two fierce and mighty lions amid a herd.'

Arjuna and Bhima find themselves surrounded, yet the text immediately shifts perspective: amid the great mass of chariot-warriors they appear as predators among a herd. Their combined action becomes the center of the chapter.
