संजय उवाच
एवं व्यूढेष्व् अनीकेषु भूयिष्ठम् अनुवर्तिषु ॥
ब्रह्मलोकपराः सर्वे समपद्यन्त भारत ॥
न ह्य् अनीकम् अनीकेन समसज्जत संकुले ॥
न रथा रथिभिः सार्धं न पदाताः पदातिभिः ॥
अश्वा नाश्वैर् अयुध्यन्त न गजा गजयोधिभिः ॥
महान् व्यतिकरो रौद्रः सेनयोः समपद्यत ॥
नरनागरथेष्व् एवं व्यवकीर्णेषु सर्वशः ॥
क्षये तस्मिन् महारौद्रे निर्विशेषम् अजायत ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
evaṃ vyūḍheṣv anīkeṣu bhūyiṣṭham anuvartiṣu ||
brahmalokaparāḥ sarve samapadyanta bhārata ||
na hy anīkam anīkena samasajjata saṃkule ||
na rathā rathibhiḥ sārdhaṃ na padātāḥ padātibhiḥ ||
aśvā nāśvair ayudhyanta na gajā gajayodhibhiḥ ||
mahān vyatikaro raudraḥ senayoḥ samapadyata ||
naranāgaratheṣv evaṃ vyavakīrṇeṣu sarvaśaḥ ||
kṣaye tasmin mahāraudre nirviśeṣam ajāyata ||
Sanjaya said: "When the armies had thus been arrayed and for the most part still continued the fight, all became bound for the world of Brahma, O Bharata. In this confusion, line no longer met line; chariots did not fight with charioteers, nor foot soldiers with foot soldiers. Horses did not clash with horses, nor elephants with elephant-riders: a great and terrible confusion arose between the two armies. When men, elephants and chariots were thus scattered everywhere, in that dreadful destruction everything became indistinguishable."

The battle loses its order: there is no longer a clear formation or matched pairs of opponents. When warriors are ready to die for the sake of the highest world, the battlefield itself becomes a space of total indistinction.
