कोशसंजनने मन्त्रे व्यूहप्रहरणेषु च ॥
नाथम् अन्यं न पश्यामि कुरूणां कुरुसत्तम ॥
बुद्ध्या विशुद्धया युक्तो यः कुरूंस् तारयेद् भयात् ॥
योधांस् त्वम् अप्लवे हित्वा पितृलोकं गमिष्यसि ॥
kośasaṃjanane mantre vyūhapraharaṇeṣu ca ||
nātham anyaṃ na paśyāmi kurūṇāṃ kurusattama ||
buddhyā viśuddhayā yukto yaḥ kurūṃs tārayed bhayāt ||
yodhāṃs tvam aplave hitvā pitṛlokaṃ gamiṣyasi ||
[Karna:] In amassing the treasury, in wise counsel, in the arraying of troops and the dealing of blows, I see no other protector for the Kurus, O best of the Kurus. You, endowed with unclouded intellect, who alone could deliver the Kurus from peril — you, leaving the warriors in the fordless deep, will depart to the world of the ancestors.

Karna enumerates Bhishma's gifts — treasury, counsel, battle order, the blow: in him alone was combined all that upholds a kingdom, and so he seems irreplaceable. But precisely in this "I see no other protector" the flaw of a system that rests everything on one man is laid bare: an irreplaceable man is a hidden weakness, not a strength of the community. The image of warriors left "in the fordless deep" echoes what came before: the one who departs carries away with him the support that should have been placed in dharma and in many, not in one. The verse teaches that a wise community does not stake everything on a single man, however great he may be, and that grief over the "irreplaceable" is also a reproach to those who never raised up other supports, having trusted instead in a mortal.
