स नो दिव्यास्त्रसंपन्नश् चक्षुर्विषयम् आगतः ॥
कर्तारः स्म वयं सर्वं यच् चिकीर्षाम हृद्गतम् ॥
भवतश् च प्रियं यत् स्याद् अस्माकं च यशस्करम् ॥
वयम् एनं हनिष्यामो निकृष्यायोधनाद् बहिः ॥
अद्यास्त्व् अनर्जुना भूमिर् अत्रिगर्ताथ वा पुनः ॥
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानीमो नैतन् मिथ्या भविष्यति ॥

satyaṃ te pratijānīmo naitan mithyā bhaviṣyati ||
[Sushaman:] He [Arjuna], possessed of divine weapon-lore, has appeared before our eyes; we will accomplish all that we conceived, hidden in the heart. That which will please you and bring us glory — we will slay him, having lured him away from the battlefield to some other place. This day let the earth become either without Arjuna or without the Trigartas; truly we vow to you — this will not prove vain.

The Trigartas make the fearsome vow, "either without Arjuna or without the Trigartas" — an oath in which self-sacrifice is placed in the service of vengeance. Their valor is great, their readiness to die genuine; but all of it is given not to truth but to old malice and to pleasing Duryodhana. Thus self-renunciation stripped of a righteous purpose turns into tragedy: men are ready to die — but for untruth. The verse teaches that even the greatest resolve to die is not virtue in itself if it serves vengeance; that an oath sealed with blood is revealed not by its firmness but by what it is devoted to; and that valor given over to resentment leads only to fruitless death.
