बभ्रुकौशेयवर्णास् तु सुवर्णवरमालिनः ॥

राजानं रोचमानं ते हयाः संख्ये समावहन् ॥
babhrukauśeyavarṇās tu suvarṇavaramālinaḥ ||
ūhur aglānamanasaś cekitānaṃ hayottamāḥ ||
indrāyudhasavarṇais tu kuntibhojo hayottamaiḥ ||
āyāt suvaśyaiḥ purujin mātulaḥ savyasācinaḥ ||
antarikṣasavarṇās tu tārakācitritā iva ||
rājānaṃ rocamānaṃ te hayāḥ saṃkhye samāvahan ||
Horses the color of tawny silk, in excellent golden garlands, excellent horses, bore the undaunted Chekitana. On excellent horses the color of the rainbow, obedient, rode up Kuntibhoja Purujit, maternal uncle of Savyasachin. And sky-colored horses, as if studded with stars, bore King Rochamana into battle.

The imagery of the horses here reaches to the very sky: rainbow-colored — "Indra's bow" — for Purujit, and the color of the starry heavens for Rochamana. The earthly battle seems to mirror the colors of heaven, and the horses are likened now to the rainbow, now to the starry vault. It is telling that among the warriors is named Purujit, Arjuna's maternal uncle — the blood ties of Kunti draw kin together under one banner. The verse teaches that in a great undertaking both heavenly beauty and earthly bonds of kinship come together; that a reflection of the higher order rests even on the field of battle, recalling a greater order behind human strife; and that kinship through the mother, as through the father, calls one to stand alongside — Purujit follows his nephew, and blood serves the cause of truth.
