ततो धनंजयो बाणैस् तत एव महारथान् ॥

नाशक्नुवंस् ते संसोढुं स्पर्शम् अग्नेर् इव प्रजाः ॥
संवेष्टयन्न् अनीकानि शरवर्षेण पाण्डवः ॥
सुपर्णपातवद् राजन्न् आयात् प्राग्ज्योतिषं प्रति ॥
tato dhanaṃjayo bāṇais tata eva mahārathān ||
āyād vinighnan kauravyān dahan kakṣam ivānalaḥ ||
tasya vegam asahyaṃ tu kuntīputrasya dhīmataḥ ||
nāśaknuvaṃs te saṃsoḍhuṃ sparśam agner iva prajāḥ ||
saṃveṣṭayann anīkāni śaravarṣeṇa pāṇḍavaḥ ||
suparṇapātavad rājann āyāt prāgjyotiṣaṃ prati ||
Then Dhananjaya, with arrows, at once advanced, striking down the great chariot-warriors of the Kauravas, consuming them as fire consumes dry brush. His irresistible onslaught, that of the wise son of Kunti, they could not endure, as creatures cannot endure the touch of fire. Enveloping the ranks in a rain of arrows, the Pandava, like Garuda's swoop, O sovereign, pressed on toward Bhagadatta.

Arjuna rushes toward Bhagadatta like fire through dry brush, like Garuda swooping down: the images of the blaze and the king of birds show an unstoppable force before which enemies are helpless, "as creatures before the touch of fire." It is telling that even while consuming his foes he is not diverted from his goal -- his onslaught is focused, not scattered. The verse teaches that true strength, like fire and like Garuda, moves toward its goal unstoppably, without wasting itself; that before resolve gathered into one, enemies retreat of themselves, unable to bear its heat; and that valor which does not splinter into chance skirmishes but is directed at what matters most gains the swiftness of an elemental force that nothing can withstand.
