लगुडायोगुडाश्मानः शतघ्न्यश् च सशक्तयः ॥

क्षुराः क्षुरप्रनालीका वत्सदन्तास् त्रिसंधिनः ॥
चक्राणि विशिखाः प्रासा विविधान्य् आयुधानि च ॥
प्रपेतुः सर्वतो दिग्भ्यः प्रदिग्भ्यश् चार्जुनं प्रति ॥
laguḍāyoguḍāśmānaḥ śataghnyaś ca saśaktayaḥ ||
gadāparighanistriṃśaśūlamudgarapaṭṭiśāḥ ||
sakampanarṣṭinakharā musalāni paraśvadhāḥ ||
kṣurāḥ kṣurapranālīkā vatsadantās trisaṃdhinaḥ ||
cakrāṇi viśikhāḥ prāsā vividhāny āyudhāni ca ||
prapetuḥ sarvato digbhyaḥ pradigbhyaś cārjunaṃ prati ||
Clubs, iron balls and stones, shataghnis and shakti-spears, maces, parighas, swords, spears, hammers and pattishas, javelins, blades and knives, pestles, axes, razor-arrows, nalika-arrows, "calf's-tooth" arrows, three-jointed arrows, discs, arrows, prasa-spears, and various weapons rained down upon Arjuna from all quarters and from the intermediate quarters.

Shakuni unleashes upon Arjuna not something real but an illusion -- a phantasm of every kind of weapon pouring from everywhere. This long catalogue of implements shows how inventive illusion becomes, straining to overwhelm by number and variety where it cannot prevail by strength. It is telling that this whole mass is a deception, a phantom with no substance beneath it. The verse teaches that falsehood, powerless in honest battle, resorts to a multitude of phantoms to frighten and confound; that abundance and variety of threats do not by themselves make them real; and that wise is one who discerns, behind the fearsome multiplicity of illusion, its empty foundation -- for what could not prevail by truth strains to prevail by delusion, which dissolves at the first ray of real knowledge.
