समासाद्य तु पाण्डूनाम् अनीकानि सहस्रशः ॥
द्रोणेन चरता संख्ये प्रभग्नानि शितैः शरैः ॥
तेषु प्रमथ्यमानेषु द्रोणेनाद्भुतकर्मणा ॥
पर्यवारयद् आसाद्य द्रोणं सेनापतिः स्वयम् ॥
तद् अद्भुतम् अभूद् युद्धं द्रोणपाञ्चाल्ययोस् तदा ॥
नैव तस्योपमा का चित् संभवेद् इति मे मतिः ॥
samāsādya tu pāṇḍūnām anīkāni sahasraśaḥ ||
droṇena caratā saṃkhye prabhagnāni śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
teṣu pramathyamāneṣu droṇenādbhutakarmaṇā ||
paryavārayad āsādya droṇaṃ senāpatiḥ svayam ||
tad adbhutam abhūd yuddhaṃ droṇapāñcālyayos tadā ||
naiva tasyopamā kā cit saṃbhaved iti me matiḥ ||
Having met the armies of the Pandavas -- thousands of them shattered by sharp arrows by Drona, who roamed the fight -- when those armies were being crushed by Drona, wondrous in deeds, the commander Dhrishtadyumna himself came forward and barred the way to Drona. Most wondrous was then the battle of Drona and the Panchala; for it, I think, no comparison could be found.

When Drona crushes thousands, the commander himself comes forth to meet him -- the one man his equal. Thus the teacher and his destined slayer come together, and their battle is such that "no comparison can be found." Here the law of counterweight shows itself: against the greatest force is found the one force fit to match it. It is telling that the tradition admits its own powerlessness to describe this battle -- there are deeds beyond all likeness. The verse teaches that fate prepares a worthy opponent for every terrible force, and the unconquerable meets the one who will stop him; that there are encounters before which even the art of comparison falls silent; and that the meeting of Drona and Dhrishtadyumna is not merely a duel but a collision of destinies, in which the coming denouement already glimmers.
