कर्णदुःशासनकृपैर् वृतो राजा महारथैः ॥

प्रमुखे तस्य सैन्यस्य द्रोणो ऽवस्थितनायके ॥
सिन्धुराजस् तथातिष्ठच् छ्रीमान् मेरुर् इवाचलः ॥
karṇaduḥśāsanakṛpair vṛto rājā mahārathaiḥ ||
devarājopamaḥ śrīmāñ śvetacchatrābhisaṃvṛtaḥ ||
cāmaravyajanākṣepair udayann iva bhāskaraḥ ||
pramukhe tasya sainyasya droṇo 'vasthitanāyake ||
sindhurājas tathātiṣṭhac chrīmān merur ivācalaḥ ||
Accompanied by Karna, Duhshasana, and Kripa, the great chariot-warriors, the king [Duryodhana], like the king of gods, majestic, shaded by a white parasol, [stood]. At the head of that army, when Drona stood as leader, the king of Sindhu [Jayadratha], majestic, stood there, like immovable Meru.

Jayadratha stands "immovable, like Meru" -- and in this image of a mountain destined to become a barrier, his fateful role already glimmers: tomorrow it is precisely he who, holding the Pandavas back at the entrance to the formation, will doom Abhimanyu to death. The splendor of the kings beneath the white parasol, majestic as gods, sets off the coming crime. It is significant that Jayadratha's immovability here is not valor but the barrier that will close the trap. The verse teaches that outward greatness and immovability can serve an evil deed -- a mountain turned into a wall blocks the path of rescue; that splendor and godlike appearance are no pledge of righteousness; and that in Jayadratha's very steadfastness, beautiful in appearance, lies hidden its ominous purpose -- to become the wall against which the boy's hope of rescue will be shattered.
