यच् चाश्वस्तास् तवेच्छामः शर्म पार्थ तद् अस्तु ते ॥
मनसश् च प्रियान् अर्थान् वीर क्षिप्रम् अवाप्नुहि ॥
इति ते तं नरव्याघ्रं प्रशंसन्तो महारथाः ॥
निद्रया समवाक्षिप्तास् तूष्णीम् आसन् विशां पते ॥
अश्वपृष्ठेषु चाप्य् अन्ये रथनीडेषु चापरे ॥
गजस्कन्धगताश् चान्ये शेरते चापरे क्षितौ ॥
सायुधाः सगदाश् चैव सखड्गाः सपरश्वधाः ॥
सप्रासकवचाश् चान्ये नराः सुप्ताः पृथक् पृथक् ॥
yac cāśvastās tavecchāmaḥ śarma pārtha tad astu te ||
manasaś ca priyān arthān vīra kṣipram avāpnuhi ||
iti te taṃ naravyāghraṃ praśaṃsanto mahārathāḥ ||
nidrayā samavākṣiptās tūṣṇīm āsan viśāṃ pate ||
aśvapṛṣṭheṣu cāpy anye rathanīḍeṣu cāpare ||
gajaskandhagatāś cānye śerate cāpare kṣitau ||
sāyudhāḥ sagadāś caiva sakhaḍgāḥ saparaśvadhāḥ ||
saprāsakavacāś cānye narāḥ suptāḥ pṛthak pṛthak ||
‘And we, comforted, wish you well-being, O Partha — may it be yours; and may you swiftly attain the goals dear to your heart, O hero.’ Thus praising that tiger among men, the great warriors, overcome by sleep, fell silent, O lord of the people. Some on the backs of horses, others on the platforms of chariots, some on the shoulders of elephants, others lying upon the ground; with their weapons, their maces, their swords, their axes, some with javelins and in armor, the men fell asleep, one apart from another.

The warriors fall asleep wherever rest overtakes them — on horses, on elephants, on the ground, without letting go of their weapons. This mingling of war and sleep is significant: fighters ready to strike are seized by a defenseless slumber. The verse teaches that even in the very thick of enmity a person remains a fragile being, in need of rest; and the image of men asleep with their weapons still in hand reveals the warrior's double nature — fearsome and defenseless at once, like every mortal before the power of sleep.
