उद्यतप्रतिपिष्टानां खड्गानां वीरबाहुभिः ॥
स एव शब्दस् तद्रूपो वाससां निज्यताम् इव ॥
अर्धासिभिस् तथा खड्गैस् तोमरैः सपरश्वधैः ॥
निकृष्टयुद्धं संसक्तं महद् आसीत् सुदारुणम् ॥
गजाश्वकायप्रभवां नरदेहप्रवाहिनीम् ॥
शस्त्रमत्स्यसुसंपूर्णां मांसशोणितकर्दमाम् ॥
आर्तनादस्वनवतीं पताकावस्त्रफेनिलाम् ॥
नदीं प्रावर्तयन् वीराः परलोकप्रवाहिनीम् ॥

sa eva śabdas tadrūpo vāsasāṃ nijyatām iva ||
ardhāsibhis tathā khaḍgais tomaraiḥ saparaśvadhaiḥ ||
nikṛṣṭayuddhaṃ saṃsaktaṃ mahad āsīt sudāruṇam ||
gajāśvakāyaprabhavāṃ naradehapravāhinīm ||
śastramatsyasusaṃpūrṇāṃ māṃsaśoṇitakardamām ||
ārtanādasvanavatīṃ patākāvastraphenilām ||
nadīṃ prāvartayan vīrāḥ paralokapravāhinīm ||
Of swords raised and struck down by the arms of heroes — that same sound, of that same kind, as of clothes being beaten. With half-swords and swords, with lances and axes, the close combat, locked together, was great, most terrible. A river arising from the bodies of elephants and horses, carrying the bodies of men, full of fish that were weapons, with a mire of flesh and blood, with cries of pain, foaming with banners and garments, the heroes set flowing — a river flowing into the world beyond.

The battlefield turns into a river of blood — with fish that are weapons, foam of banners, sweeping bodies "into the other world." It is telling that this infernal river was "set flowing by heroes" with their own hands. The verse teaches that war with its own hands creates a stream of death; and the image of a river bearing the dead across the boundary shows that valor given over to slaughter cuts a channel not toward glory, but toward the abode of the departed.
