तयोः समभवद् युद्धं द्रोणपाण्डवयोर् महत् ॥
आमिषार्थं महाराज गगने श्येनयोर् इव ॥
यद् यच् चकार द्रोणस् तु कुन्तीपुत्रजिगीषया ॥
तत् तत् प्रतिजघानाशु प्रहसंस् तस्य पाण्डवः ॥
यदा द्रोणो न शक्नोति पाण्डवस्य विशेषणे ॥
ततः प्रादुश्चकारास्त्रम् अस्त्रमार्गविशारदः ॥
ऐन्द्रं पाशुपतं त्वाष्ट्रं वायव्यम् अथ वारुणम् ॥
मुक्तं मुक्तं द्रोणचापात् तज् जघान धनंजयः ॥
tayoḥ samabhavad yuddhaṃ droṇapāṇḍavayor mahat ||
āmiṣārthaṃ mahārāja gagane śyenayor iva ||
yad yac cakāra droṇas tu kuntīputrajigīṣayā ||
tat tat pratijaghānāśu prahasaṃs tasya pāṇḍavaḥ ||
yadā droṇo na śaknoti pāṇḍavasya viśeṣaṇe ||
tataḥ prāduścakārāstram astramārgaviśāradaḥ ||
aindraṃ pāśupataṃ tvāṣṭraṃ vāyavyam atha vāruṇam ||
muktaṃ muktaṃ droṇacāpāt taj jaghāna dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
The warriors beheld the valor of those two, astonished. Between those two, Drona and the Pandava, a great battle arose over the prize, O great king, like two hawks in the sky. Whatever Drona did, longing to vanquish the son of Kunti, the Pandava swiftly countered it, smiling. When Drona could not surpass the Pandava, then, versed in the ways of weapons, he displayed his weapons: the Aindra, the Pashupata, the Tvashtra, the Vayavya, and then the Varuna.

Drona and Arjuna fight 'like two hawks over prey': teacher and pupil, equal in skill, each seeking the advantage. It is telling that Arjuna counters every move of his master 'smiling' -- the pupil has become the teacher's equal. The verse teaches that in this lies both the master's triumph and his sorrow: his pupil has reached his own height; and a duel between a teacher and the pupil who has equaled him is a spectacle in which pride and grief blend inseparably.
