कस्य चित् त्व् अथ कालस्य कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
शुश्राव वृष्णिचक्रस्य मौसले कदनं कृतम् ॥
विमुक्तं वासुदेवं च श्रुत्वा रामं च पाण्डवः ॥
समानीयाब्रवीद् भ्रातॄन् किं करिष्याम इत्य् उत ॥
परस्परं समासाद्य ब्रह्मदण्डबलात्कृतान् ॥
वृष्णीन् विनष्टांस् ते श्रुत्वा व्यथिताः पाण्डवाभवन् ॥

śuśrāva vṛṣṇicakrasya mausale kadanaṃ kṛtam ||
vimuktaṃ vāsudevaṃ ca śrutvā rāmaṃ ca pāṇḍavaḥ ||
samānīyābravīd bhrātṝn kiṃ kariṣyāma ity uta ||
parasparaṃ samāsādya brahmadaṇḍabalātkṛtān ||
vṛṣṇīn vinaṣṭāṃs te śrutvā vyathitāḥ pāṇḍavābhavan ||
After some time had passed, Yudhishthira, king of the Kurus, heard that destruction had befallen the host of the Vrishnis in the great club-massacre. Having heard that Vasudeva had abandoned his body, and Rama as well, the Pandava assembled his brothers and said: "What are we to do?" Hearing that the Vrishnis, compelled by the force of the brahminic curse, had turned upon one another and perished, the Pandavas were stricken with grief.

The destruction of the Vrishnis comes not from an external enemy but from mutual annihilation "by the force of the brahminic curse" — a clan unconquerable by any foe perishes by its own hand, in accordance with the word of enraged sages. Thus the terrible power of the curse of the righteous is revealed, along with the inexorability of what has been ordained. The departure of Vasudeva-Krishna and Balarama plunges the Pandavas into confusion: with the Lord's withdrawal from the world, their last foundation is extinguished. The verse teaches that the great and mighty often perish not by external force but by internal strife permitted from above; and that for the devoted there is no greater shock than the departure of their Lord, for with His going the world itself loses its center and its light.
