ततो महान् निनदः प्रादुरासीत्; सस्त्रीकुमारस्य पुरस्य तस्य ॥
अथाब्रवीत् केशवः संनिवर्त्य; शब्दं श्रुत्वा योषितां क्रोशतीनाम् ॥
पुरीम् इमाम् एष्यति सव्यसाची; स वो दुःखान् मोचयिता नराग्र्यः ॥
ततो गत्वा केशवस् तं ददर्श; रामं वने स्थितम् एकं विविक्ते ॥
अथापश्यद् योगयुक्तस्य तस्य; नागं मुखान् निःसरन्तं महान्तम् ॥
श्वेतं ययौ स ततः प्रेक्ष्यमाणो; महार्णवो येन महानुभावः ॥
tato mahān ninadaḥ prādurāsīt; sastrīkumārasya purasya tasya ||
athābravīt keśavaḥ saṃnivartya; śabdaṃ śrutvā yoṣitāṃ krośatīnām ||
purīm imām eṣyati savyasācī; sa vo duḥkhān mocayitā narāgryaḥ ||
tato gatvā keśavas taṃ dadarśa; rāmaṃ vane sthitam ekaṃ vivikte ||
athāpaśyad yogayuktasya tasya; nāgaṃ mukhān niḥsarantaṃ mahāntam ||
śvetaṃ yayau sa tataḥ prekṣyamāṇo; mahārṇavo yena mahānubhāvaḥ ||
Then a great lamentation arose from that city, with its women and children. Keshava, turning back upon hearing the cries of the wailing women, said: "Savyasachin will come to this city; he, the foremost of men, will deliver you from grief." Then, going on, Keshava found Rama dwelling alone in the forest, in solitude. He saw then that from Rama, absorbed in yoga, there issued forth from his mouth a vast, white serpent; it went then, before the eyes of all, toward the great ocean — by which path the great one passed away.

The departure of Balarama reveals His true nature: from the mouth of the one absorbed in yoga there issues a colossal white serpent — Ananta-Shesha, upon whose hoods the universe rests, who had merely taken a human form upon earth. Thus the death of the holy one proves to be not an end but the shedding of a bodily shell and a return to eternal being. The Lord departs from the world voluntarily, through yoga, not by suffering death. The verse teaches that the great ones who descend into the world do not die as mortals do, but leave the body through the conscious power of yoga, returning to their primordial form; and that the visible death of an ascetic is but a veil beneath which the return of the imperishable to the imperishable is accomplished, for what descends from above is not subject to annihilation but merely conceals its divine nature for a time.
