From the contemplation of the One to the way one looks at living beings. yas tu sarvāṇi bhūtāny ātmany evānupaśyati — "he who sees all beings in the Ātman and the Ātman in all beings turns away from no one any more". The verb anu-paśyati literally means "to see after" — after a teacher, after the truth one has heard (that very śuśruma — "we have heard" — of the tenth mantra): this is not a spontaneous flash but a sight trained by a living succession of knowledge.
na vijugupsate — "does not turn away", does not loathe, does not shrink. Contempt, revulsion, enmity are possible only while another is seen as alien — a piece of matter, a rival, a means. But when in every body — from a god to a blade of grass — one recognises a soul of the same spiritual nature, a spark of the same Lord, the very ground of hatred disappears. It is from this, and not from sentiment, that genuine compassion for all beings grows: it is the direct consequence of correct sight.
The Bhagavad-gītā (6.30) gives this mantra its exact counterpart: yo māṁ paśyati sarvatra sarvaṁ ca mayi paśyati / tasyāhaṁ na praṇaśyāmi sa ca me na praṇaśyati — "for him who sees Me everywhere and sees everything in Me, I am never lost, nor is he ever lost to Me". To see all beings in the Ātman means, in the end, never to lose sight of the Lord.
