«"Om" is the seed, "svāhā" is the power, that ending in the dative case is the pin. "Om" — on the heart, "klām klīm klūm" — on the tuft, "sauḥ" — on the armor, that ending in the dative — on the eyes, "svāhā" — on the weapon. Note that here the pin is named caturthy-antam, “ending in the dative case.” Caturthī is the grammatical name of the dative case; and in the previous mantra the pin was called the vocative (1.6). That is, in two mantras running, the fastening part is named the cases of address: the one by which one calls, and the one by which one gives.
The dative case is the case of giving: I give to whom, I bow to whom, I serve whom. Combining this with what was said reading the fifth and sixth passages, we get a structure that runs through this whole book without a single break. The mantra rests not on understanding, but on address; and this is expressed grammatically by three cases: the vocative (I call), the dative (I give), and the imperative mood (I ask to come).
The Vaiṣṇava side points to such structures as testimony of language itself, and its rule was cited reading the Varāha (5.57): grammar is more stubborn than doctrine. Let us add what is promised at the end: sac-cid-ānanda sukhī mokṣī bhavati. “Being, conscious, blissful” stands here beside “happy and free,” that is, in one list with ordinary human goods.
This detail shows that these words, in such a book, are used not as a definition of the Highest, but as a description of a person's condition; and this, to my mind, deserves remembering every time one meets them in such lists.
