Note the dig-bandha, “the locking of the directions.” This rite is common in mantric practice and consists in the reciter, as it were, sealing the space around himself, so that nothing enters during the repetition. It is sealed by proclaiming the three worlds: bhūḥ (earth), bhuvaḥ (mid-air), suvaḥ (heaven) — and the syllable om.
That is, a circle is drawn vertically, not around the horizon: below, in the middle, and above. Let us add what should be said in substance about this custom. Its purpose is that the one praying should have a place set apart from the rest; and this purpose, to my mind, is sound and not superstitious, for anyone who has tried to concentrate knows the work begins with closing the door.
The Vaiṣṇava side sets no such locks, and its practice is simpler; but it has a correspondence, worth citing. It fences off not space, but time: it appoints an hour, and that hour is kept unchanging; and the brahma-muhūrta, the hour before dawn, was discussed reading the Jābāla-darśana (1.4). The difference here is telling: there, a circle is drawn around oneself; here, time is set aside from one's day.
And the second is, to my mind, the more reliable: a circle can be drawn even in a bad disposition, but an hour cannot be given except by taking it from oneself.
