Citra Gārgyāyaṇi, preparing to offer sacrifice, chose Āruṇi; he sent his son Śvetaketu: “perform the sacrifice”. And when he was seated, Citra asked him: “Son of Gautama, is there a closed place in the world into which you will set me — or is there another, and, knowing it, will you set me in its world?” He said: “I do not know this; well then, I shall ask my teacher.” Coming to his father he asked: “Thus he asked me; how shall I answer?” The father said: “I too do not know this. In the priestly assembly we merely recite what we have learned and take what others give us. Come, let us both go.” And, firewood in hand, he approached Citra Gārgyāyaṇi: “Let me become your pupil.” He said to him: “You are worthy of Brahman, Gautama, since you have come to me; come, I will teach you.”

The Upaniṣad opens not with a maxim but with a scene, and the scene overturns the usual order of things.
Āruṇi is Uddālaka Āruṇi, one of the most venerated teachers of the Upaniṣads: it is he who in the Chāndogya instructs his son Śvetaketu with the words “that thou art”. And Citra Gārgyāyaṇi is the patron of the sacrifice, a king — by custom the man who hires the priests and pays them. And now the employer puts to the priest a question that neither son nor father can answer.
His question deserves unpacking. “Is there a closed place in the world into which you will set me?” The sacrifice promises a world — but which? Citra asks: that place to which your rite will bring me — is it shut, enclosed? Or is there another, and, knowing it, will you lead me out there? Behind this stands a doubt about the sufficiency of the rite itself: heavens won by sacrifice may prove a cage.
The most important thing here is what Āruṇi does. He does not put the question off, does not invoke his rank, does not invent an answer. He says plainly: “I too do not know this” — and adds the words every knower ought to remember: “in the assembly we merely recite what we have learned and take what others give”. That is: our craft is to pronounce the memorised correctly; knowledge of the substance we have none.
And he goes as a pupil. Samit-pāṇi, “with firewood in hand”, is no domestic detail but a formal sign: so comes one who asks to be accepted as a student, for the student carries wood for the teacher's sacrificial fire. The famed brāhmaṇa comes with firewood to a kṣatriya.
Citra answers with praise, and the praise is not for learning: “you are worthy of Brahman — since you have come to me”. What makes a man fit for the highest knowledge is not rank but the readiness to come near and ask. The end of the Śvetāśvatara says the same, where the secret is not given to the unquiet, and so does the whole tradition, which sets humility before learning.
