This line contains an assertion we agree with entirely, and it deserves being written out: brāhmaṇatvam ekam eva, "brahmin-ness is one alone." The meaning is this. The castes and orders are distinct, their customs separate; but what makes a brahmin a brahmin is one thing, and it is the same in all.
It is worth noting the first half-verse too: bahu-mārga-pravṛttiṃ kalpayanti, "they contrive movement along many paths." The verb kalpayanti, "they contrive," is said with a tinge of disapproval: the paths were multiplied by people, not by Him. This observation is true and has not gone stale. There are many teachings and schools, and each insists on its own distinctiveness; but that for whose sake they all exist is one, and the difference between them is most often in customs, not in the object.
The Vaiṣṇava reading agrees with this and holds the same distinction. In the Vaiṣṇava tradition four sampradāyas, "traditions," are spoken of, and this is not considered a misfortune; but it is also said that their object is one, and that to argue about paths without moving along any of them is a pointless business. The Gītā says it most briefly of all: "in whatever way people come to Me, in that same way I accept them; by My road men go from every side" (4.11).
