Dhananjaya caught up with Uttara as he fled, and having gone a hundred paces in swift pursuit, seized him by the hair. Seized by Arjuna, the son of Virata then wailed piteously and at length. ‘A hundred nishkas of pure gold I will give you, and eight great brilliant vaidurya-gems set in gold; a chariot decked with golden poles and yoked to fine horses; and ten rutting elephants — only let me go, Brihannada.’ While he spoke such words and others like them, wailing senselessly, the tiger among men laughed and brought him to the chariot. Then Partha said to him, tormented by fear and bereft of his senses: ‘If you have no heart to fight the enemy, scorcher of foes, come and hold my horses while I fight the enemy. Drive this army of chariots, protected by the strength of my arms, unassailable and terrible, guarded by heroes, by great charioteers. Do not be afraid, foremost of princes; you are a kshatriya, formidable to your foes. I will fight the Kurus and win back your cattle for you. Enter this army of chariots, unassailable and hard to approach, and be my charioteer, best of men, while I fight the Kurus.’ So Bibhatsu, unconquered, spoke, comforting Vairati for a while. Then Partha, best of those who strike, set him upon the chariot, though he writhed, unwilling and tormented by fear.

Arjuna does not scorn Uttara's fear, yet he does not let it take hold of the chariot of life. He changes his role: if you cannot be a warrior, become the charioteer for the one who will fulfill the duty.
