अर्जुन उवाच
इषुपाते च सेनाया हयान् संयच्छ सारथे ॥
यावत् समीक्षे सैन्ये ऽस्मिन् क्वासौ कुरुकुलाधमः ॥
सर्वान् अन्यान् अनादृत्य दृष्ट्वा तम् अतिमानिनम् ॥
तस्य मूर्ध्नि पतिष्यामि तत एते पराजिताः ॥
एष व्यवस्थितो द्रोणो द्रौणिश् च तदनन्तरम् ॥
भीष्मः कृपश् च कर्णश् च महेष्वासा व्यवस्थिताः ॥
राजानं नात्र पश्यामि गाः समादाय गच्छति ॥
दक्षिणं मार्गम् आस्थाय शङ्के जीवपरायणः ॥
उत्सृज्यैतद् रथानीकं गच्छ यत्र सुयोधनः ॥
तत्रैव योत्स्ये वैराटे नास्ति युद्धं निरामिषम् ॥
तं जित्वा विनिवर्तिष्ये गाः समादाय वै पुनः ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
एवम् उक्तः स वैराटिर् हयान् संयम्य यत्नतः ॥
नियम्य च ततो रश्मीन् यत्र ते कुरुपुंगवाः ॥
अचोदयत् ततो वाहान् यतो दुर्योधनस् ततः ॥
उत्सृज्य रथवंशं तु प्रयाते श्वेतवाहने ॥
अभिप्रायं विदित्वास्य द्रोणो वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥
नैषो ऽन्तरेण राजानं बीभत्सुः स्थातुम् इच्छति ॥
तस्य पार्ष्णिं ग्रहीष्यामो जवेनाभिप्रयास्यतः ॥
न ह्य् एनम् अभिसंक्रुद्धम् एको युध्येत संयुगे ॥
अन्यो देवात् सहस्राक्षात् कृष्णाद् वा देवकीसुतात् ॥
किं नो गावः करिष्यन्ति धनं वा विपुलं तथा ॥
दुर्योधनः पार्थजले पुरा नौर् इव मज्जति ॥

rājānaṃ nātra paśyāmi gāḥ samādāya gacchati ||
dakṣiṇaṃ mārgam āsthāya śaṅke jīvaparāyaṇaḥ ||
utsṛjyaitad rathānīkaṃ gaccha yatra suyodhanaḥ ||
tatraiva yotsye vairāṭe nāsti yuddhaṃ nirāmiṣam ||
taṃ jitvā vinivartiṣye gāḥ samādāya vai punaḥ ||
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
evam uktaḥ sa vairāṭir hayān saṃyamya yatnataḥ ||
niyamya ca tato raśmīn yatra te kurupuṃgavāḥ ||
acodayat tato vāhān yato duryodhanas tataḥ ||
utsṛjya rathavaṃśaṃ tu prayāte śvetavāhane ||
abhiprāyaṃ viditvāsya droṇo vacanam abravīt ||
naiṣo 'ntareṇa rājānaṃ bībhatsuḥ sthātum icchati ||
tasya pārṣṇiṃ grahīṣyāmo javenābhiprayāsyataḥ ||
na hy enam abhisaṃkruddham eko yudhyeta saṃyuge ||
anyo devāt sahasrākṣāt kṛṣṇād vā devakīsutāt ||
kiṃ no gāvaḥ kariṣyanti dhanaṃ vā vipulaṃ tathā ||
duryodhanaḥ pārthajale purā naur iva majjati ||
Arjuna said: "Hold the horses, charioteer, at bowshot's distance from the army, while I look through this host: where is that basest of the Kuru race? Paying no heed to all the rest, once I have sighted that arrogant man, I shall fall upon his head; then these others will be defeated. Here stands Drona, and after him Drauni; Bhishma, Kripa, and Karna, the great archers, stand at their posts. I do not see the king here: taking the cows, he goes, I think, by the southern road, caring for his life. Abandon this array of chariots and drive to where Suyodhana is. There indeed I shall fight, son of Virata; there is no battle without a prize. Having conquered him, I shall turn back again, taking the cows." Vaishampayana said: "Thus addressed, the son of Virata carefully checked the horses, drew in the reins, and then drove the horses to where Duryodhana was. When the White-horsed one, abandoning the line of chariots, set out, Drona, understanding his intent, said: 'This Bibhatsu does not wish to stop short of the king. We shall seize his rear as he presses forward swiftly. For no one but the thousand-eyed god, or Krishna, the son of Devaki, could fight him alone in battle once he is enraged. What will the cows do for us, or great wealth either? Duryodhana is sinking in the waters of Partha, like a boat.'"
