वैशंपायन उवाच
तं पार्थः प्रतिजग्राह वायुवेगम् इवोद्धतम् ॥
शरजालेन महता वर्षमाणम् इवाम्बुदम् ॥
तयोर् देवासुरसमः संनिपातो महान् अभूत् ॥
किरतोः शरजालानि वृत्रवासवयोर् इव ॥
न स्म सूर्यस् तदा भाति न च वाति समीरणः ॥
शरगाढे कृते व्योम्नि छायाभूते समन्ततः ॥
महांश् चटचटाशब्दो योधयोर् हन्यमानयोः ॥
दह्यताम् इव वेणूनाम् आसीत् परपुरंजय ॥
हयान् अस्यार्जुनः सर्वान् कृतवान् अल्पजीवितान् ॥
स राजन् न प्रजानाति दिशं कां चन मोहितः ॥
ततो द्रौणिर् महावीर्यः पार्थस्य विचरिष्यतः ॥
विवरं सूक्ष्मम् आलोक्य ज्यां चिच्छेद क्षुरेण ह ॥
तद् अस्यापूजयन् देवाः कर्म दृष्ट्वातिमानुषम् ॥
ततो द्रौणिर् धनूंष्य् अष्टौ व्यपक्रम्य नरर्षभम् ॥
पुनर् अभ्याहनत् पार्थं हृदये कङ्कपत्रिभिः ॥
ततः पार्थो महाबाहुः प्रहस्य स्वनवत् तदा ॥
योजयाम् आस नवया मौर्व्या गाण्डीवम् ओजसा ॥

taṃ pārthaḥ pratijagrāha vāyuvegam ivoddhatam ||
śarajālena mahatā varṣamāṇam ivāmbudam ||
tayor devāsurasamaḥ saṃnipāto mahān abhūt ||
kiratoḥ śarajālāni vṛtravāsavayor iva ||
na sma sūryas tadā bhāti na ca vāti samīraṇaḥ ||
śaragāḍhe kṛte vyomni chāyābhūte samantataḥ ||
mahāṃś caṭacaṭāśabdo yodhayor hanyamānayoḥ ||
dahyatām iva veṇūnām āsīt parapuraṃjaya ||
hayān asyārjunaḥ sarvān kṛtavān alpajīvitān ||
sa rājan na prajānāti diśaṃ kāṃ cana mohitaḥ ||
tato drauṇir mahāvīryaḥ pārthasya vicariṣyataḥ ||
vivaraṃ sūkṣmam ālokya jyāṃ ciccheda kṣureṇa ha ||
tad asyāpūjayan devāḥ karma dṛṣṭvātimānuṣam ||
tato drauṇir dhanūṃṣy aṣṭau vyapakramya nararṣabham ||
punar abhyāhanat pārthaṃ hṛdaye kaṅkapatribhiḥ ||
tataḥ pārtho mahābāhuḥ prahasya svanavat tadā ||
yojayām āsa navayā maurvyā gāṇḍīvam ojasā ||
Vaishampayana said: 'Ashvatthaman advanced against Arjuna, and Partha met him with a net of arrows, as a cloud meets the earth with rain. Their clash was like the battle of the gods and the asuras, of Vritra and Vasava. The arrows covered the sky: the sun did not shine, the wind did not stir, and the crackling was like the sound of burning bamboo. Drauni spotted a small gap and with a razor-tipped arrow severed the string of the Gandiva. The gods praised this as a superhuman feat. Withdrawing eight bow-lengths, he struck Partha again in the chest with sharp arrows. Arjuna laughed and in an instant restrung the Gandiva.'
