उत्तर उवाच
न मया निर्जिता गावो न मया निर्जिताः परे ॥
कृतं तु कर्म तत् सर्वं देवपुत्रेण केन चित् ॥
स हि भीतं द्रवन्तं मां देवपुत्रो न्यवारयत् ॥
स चातिष्ठद् रथोपस्थे वज्रहस्तनिभो युवा ॥
तेन ता निर्जिता गावस् तेन ते कुरवो जिताः ॥
तस्य तत् कर्म वीरस्य न मया तात तत् कृतम् ॥
स हि शारद्वतं द्रोणं द्रोणपुत्रं च वीर्यवान् ॥
सूतपुत्रं च भीष्मं च चकार विमुखाञ् शरैः ॥
दुर्योधनं च समरे सनागम् इव यूथपम् ॥
प्रभग्नम् अब्रवीद् भीतं राजपुत्रं महाबलम् ॥
न हास्तिनपुरे त्राणं तव पश्यामि किं चन ॥
व्यायामेन परीप्सस्व जीवितं कौरवात्मज ॥
न मोक्ष्यसे पलायंस् त्वं राजन् युद्धे मनः कुरु ॥
पृथिवीं भोक्ष्यसे जित्वा हतो वा स्वर्गम् आप्स्यसि ॥
स निवृत्तो नरव्याघ्रो मुञ्चन् वज्रनिभाञ् शरान् ॥
सचिवैः संवृतो राजा रथे नाग इव श्वसन् ॥
तत्र मे रोमहर्षो ऽभूद् ऊरुस्तम्भश् च मारिष ॥
यद् अभ्रघनसंकाशम् अनीकं व्यधमच् छरैः ॥
तत् प्रणुद्य रथानीकं सिंहसंहननो युवा ॥
कुरूंस् तान् प्रहसन् राजन् वासांस्य् अपहरद् बली ॥
एकेन तेन वीरेण षड्रथाः परिवारिताः ॥
शार्दूलेनेव मत्तेन मृगास् तृणचरा वने ॥

duryodhanaṃ ca samare sanāgam iva yūthapam ||
prabhagnam abravīd bhītaṃ rājaputraṃ mahābalam ||
na hāstinapure trāṇaṃ tava paśyāmi kiṃ cana ||
vyāyāmena parīpsasva jīvitaṃ kauravātmaja ||
na mokṣyase palāyaṃs tvaṃ rājan yuddhe manaḥ kuru ||
pṛthivīṃ bhokṣyase jitvā hato vā svargam āpsyasi ||
sa nivṛtto naravyāghro muñcan vajranibhāñ śarān ||
sacivaiḥ saṃvṛto rājā rathe nāga iva śvasan ||
tatra me romaharṣo 'bhūd ūrustambhaś ca māriṣa ||
yad abhraghanasaṃkāśam anīkaṃ vyadhamac charaiḥ ||
tat praṇudya rathānīkaṃ siṃhasaṃhanano yuvā ||
kurūṃs tān prahasan rājan vāsāṃsy apaharad balī ||
ekena tena vīreṇa ṣaḍrathāḥ parivāritāḥ ||
śārdūleneva mattena mṛgās tṛṇacarā vane ||
Uttara said: 'It was not I who won back the cows, nor I who defeated the enemy. All that deed was done by some son of a god. As I fled in fear, this son of a god stopped me; youthful, resembling the wielder of the thunderbolt, he stood on the platform of the chariot. By him the cows were won back, by him the Kurus were defeated. That deed was the hero's, father, not mine. He, mighty in valor, turned back Sharadvata, Drona, Drona's son, the suta's son, and Bhishma with his arrows. In the battle he spoke to Duryodhana, the prince of great strength, broken and afraid together with his war-elephant: "I see no refuge for you in Hastinapura. Strive with all your might to save your life, son of the Kurus. By fleeing you will not escape; set your mind on battle. Victorious, you will rule the earth; slain, you will attain heaven." That tiger among men turned back, loosing arrows like thunderbolts; the king, surrounded by his counselors, breathed hard on his chariot like an elephant. There, venerable one, my hair stood on end and my thighs went numb, as this youth, built like a lion, scattered with his arrows an army that resembled a dense cloud. Having driven off that array of chariots, the mighty youth, laughing, stripped the garments from those Kurus. That one hero alone surrounded six chariot-warriors, as a furious tiger surrounds grass-grazing deer in the forest.'
