One should never think himself honored merely because others are honored. Therefore he should not grieve when others fail to respect him. People act according to their own nature, just as they open and close their eyelids; and it is only the learned who respect others — so should the man who is respected think of the matter. Again, in this world fools, prone to sin and inclined to deceit, never show respect to those who deserve it; on the contrary, they always show disrespect toward such persons. Worldly regard and the asceticism of silence (the practice of Mauna) can never coexist. Know that this world belongs to those who are worthy of honor, and the other world to those devoted to austerity. Here in this world, O kshatriya, happiness — the world's regard — consists in worldly prosperity. This, however, is an obstacle on the path to heavenly bliss. Heavenly prosperity, on the other hand, is unattainable for a man devoid of true wisdom. The righteous say that there are various kinds of gates, all difficult to guard, leading to that higher prosperity. These are truth, honesty, modesty, self-control, purity of mind and conduct, and knowledge of the Veda. These six are undone by vanity and ignorance.'
