अयं मे नाहुष सखा गालवस् तपसो निधिः ॥
विश्वामित्रस्य शिष्यो ऽभूद् वर्षाण्य् अयुतशो नृप ॥
सो ऽयं तेनाभ्यनुज्ञात उपकारेप्सया द्विजः ॥
तम् आह भगवान् कां ते ददानि गुरुदक्षिणाम् ॥
असकृत् तेन चोक्तेन किं चिद् आगतमन्युना ॥
अयम् उक्तः प्रयच्छेति जानता विभवं लघु ॥
एकतःश्यामकर्णानां शुभ्राणां शुद्धजन्मनाम् ॥
अष्टौ शतानि मे देहि हयानां चन्द्रवर्चसाम् ॥
गुर्वर्थो दीयताम् एष यदि गालव मन्यसे ॥
इत्य् एवम् आह सक्रोधो विश्वामित्रस् तपोधनः ॥

gurvartho dīyatām eṣa yadi gālava manyase ||
ity evam āha sakrodho viśvāmitras tapodhanaḥ ||
The son of Vinata said to Yayati: "O son of Nahusha, this is my friend Galava, a treasure of austerity. O king, he was a disciple of Vishvamitra for many tens of thousands of years. This twice-born one, dismissed by him, wished to repay his teacher. The venerable Vishvamitra asked him, 'What fee, as the teacher's due, shall I give you?' When Galava asked this again and again, Vishvamitra, growing angry and knowing that his means were meager, said to him, 'Give me eight hundred horses of noble breed, white and shining like the moon, each with one black ear. If that is your wish, O Galava, let this be given as the teacher's fee.' So spoke the angered Vishvamitra, rich in austerity."

Garuda tells Yayati the whole history of the debt, hiding none of its difficulty. Galava's vow did not arise from caprice: he wished to repay his guru, but the request became nearly impossible to fulfill. Here the weight of a disciple's word is emphasized, along with the power of a guru's demand, which cannot be lightly evaded.
