"The wise see with equal vision a learned and humble brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and a dog-eater. Already here they have conquered birth, those whose mind is established in equanimity; for Brahman is flawless and equal, and so they abide in Brahman. One who knows Brahman and abides in Brahman, firm in reason and undeluded, should not rejoice on obtaining what is pleasant nor be troubled on obtaining what is unpleasant. Unattached to external contacts, he finds happiness within the atman; united with the yoga of Brahman, he partakes of imperishable happiness. The pleasures born of contact are indeed sources of suffering; they have a beginning and an end, O son of Kunti, and the wise do not delight in them. Whoever, already here, before release from the body, is able to withstand the impulse born of desire and anger, is the yogin and the happy man."

Equal vision does not erase outward differences but reveals the spiritual foundation of living beings. Once happiness is found within the atman, external pleasures lose their hold, because their finitude becomes plain.
