"'Om, tat, sat' is considered the threefold designation of Brahman. Through it brahmins, the Vedas, and sacrifices were established of old. Therefore knowers of the sacred word always begin the prescribed acts of sacrifice, gift, and austerity by uttering 'om.' With the word 'tat,' without attachment to the fruit, those who seek liberation perform the acts of sacrifice and austerity, as well as various gifts. The word 'sat' is used in the sense of true being and a good state; also, O Partha, the word 'sat' is applied to a praiseworthy deed. Steadfastness in sacrifice, austerity, and gift is likewise called 'sat,' and action performed for this purpose is also called 'sat.' Whatever is offered into the fire, given, performed as austerity, or done without faith is called 'asat,' O Partha: it bears no fruit either after death or here."

The formula "om tat sat" directs action toward Brahman, freeing it from claiming its result. But what remains decisive is not the sound itself but faith and right intention: without them even an outwardly religious act becomes "asat," devoid of spiritual reality.
