संजय उवाच
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा मध्यं प्राप्ते दिवाकरे ॥
श्रुतायुषम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य चोदयाम् आस वाजिनः ॥
अभ्यधावत् ततो राजा श्रुतायुषम् अरिंदमम् ॥
विनिघ्नन् सायकैस् तीक्ष्णैर् नवभिर् नतपर्वभिः ॥
स संवार्य रणे राजा प्रेषितान् धर्मसूनुना ॥
शरान् सप्त महेष्वासः कौन्तेयाय समर्पयत् ॥
ते तस्य कवचं भित्त्वा पपुः शोणितम् आहवे ॥
असून् इव विचिन्वन्तो देहे तस्य महात्मनः ॥
पाण्डवस् तु भृशं विद्धस् तेन राज्ञा महात्मना ॥
रणे वराहकर्णेन राजानं हृदि विव्यधे ॥
अथापरेण भल्लेन केतुं तस्य महात्मनः ॥
रथश्रेष्ठो रथात् तूर्णं भूमौ पार्थो न्यपातयत् ॥
केतुं निपतितं दृष्ट्वा श्रुतायुः स तु पार्थिवः ॥
पाण्डवं विशिखैस् तीक्ष्णै राजन् विव्याध सप्तभिः ॥
ततः क्रोधात् प्रजज्वाल धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
यथा युगान्ते भूतानि धक्ष्यन्न् इव हुताशनः ॥
क्रुद्धं तु पाण्डवं दृष्ट्वा देवगन्धर्वराक्षसाः ॥
प्रविव्यथुर् महाराज व्याकुलं चाप्य् अभूज् जगत् ॥
सर्वेषां चैव भूतानाम् इदम् आसीन् मनोगतम् ॥
त्रींल् लोकान् अद्य संक्रुद्धो नृपो ऽयं धक्ष्यतीति वै ॥
ऋषयश् चैव देवाश् च चक्रुः स्वस्त्ययनं महत् ॥
लोकानां नृप शान्त्यर्थं क्रोधिते पाण्डवे तदा ॥
स च क्रोधसमाविष्टः सृक्किणी परिलेलिहन् ॥
दधारात्मवपुर् घोरं युगान्तादित्यसंनिभम् ॥
ततः सर्वाणि सैन्यानि तावकानि विशां पते ॥
निराशान्य् अभवंस् तत्र जीवितं प्रति भारत ॥
स तु धैर्येण तं कोपं संनिवार्य महायशाः ॥
श्रुतायुषः प्रचिच्छेद मुष्टिदेशे महद् धनुः ॥
अथैनं छिन्नधन्वानं नाराचेन स्तनान्तरे ॥
निर्बिभेद रणे राजा सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः ॥
सत्वरं चरणे राजंस् तस्य वाहान् महात्मनः ॥
निजघान शरैः क्षिप्रं सूतं च सुमहाबलः ॥
हताश्वं तु रथं त्यक्त्वा दृष्ट्वा राज्ञस् तु पौरुषम् ॥
विप्रदुद्राव वेगेन श्रुतायुः समरे तदा ॥
तस्मिञ् जिते महेष्वासे धर्मपुत्रेण संयुगे ॥
दुर्योधनबलं राजन् सर्वम् आसीत् पराङ्मुखम् ॥
एतत् कृत्वा महाराज धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
व्यात्ताननो यथा कालस् तव सैन्यं जघान ह ॥

tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā madhyaṃ prāpte divākare ||
śrutāyuṣam abhiprekṣya codayām āsa vājinaḥ ||
abhyadhāvat tato rājā śrutāyuṣam ariṃdamam ||
vinighnan sāyakais tīkṣṇair navabhir nataparvabhiḥ ||
sa saṃvārya raṇe rājā preṣitān dharmasūnunā ||
śarān sapta maheṣvāsaḥ kaunteyāya samarpayat ||
te tasya kavacaṃ bhittvā papuḥ śoṇitam āhave ||
asūn iva vicinvanto dehe tasya mahātmanaḥ ||
pāṇḍavas tu bhṛśaṃ viddhas tena rājñā mahātmanā ||
raṇe varāhakarṇena rājānaṃ hṛdi vivyadhe ||
athāpareṇa bhallena ketuṃ tasya mahātmanaḥ ||
rathaśreṣṭho rathāt tūrṇaṃ bhūmau pārtho nyapātayat ||
ketuṃ nipatitaṃ dṛṣṭvā śrutāyuḥ sa tu pārthivaḥ ||
pāṇḍavaṃ viśikhais tīkṣṇai rājan vivyādha saptabhiḥ ||
tataḥ krodhāt prajajvāla dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
yathā yugānte bhūtāni dhakṣyann iva hutāśanaḥ ||
kruddhaṃ tu pāṇḍavaṃ dṛṣṭvā devagandharvarākṣasāḥ ||
pravivyathur mahārāja vyākulaṃ cāpy abhūj jagat ||
sarveṣāṃ caiva bhūtānām idam āsīn manogatam ||
trīṃl lokān adya saṃkruddho nṛpo 'yaṃ dhakṣyatīti vai ||
ṛṣayaś caiva devāś ca cakruḥ svastyayanaṃ mahat ||
lokānāṃ nṛpa śāntyarthaṃ krodhite pāṇḍave tadā ||
sa ca krodhasamāviṣṭaḥ sṛkkiṇī parilelihan ||
dadhārātmavapur ghoraṃ yugāntādityasaṃnibham ||
tataḥ sarvāṇi sainyāni tāvakāni viśāṃ pate ||
nirāśāny abhavaṃs tatra jīvitaṃ prati bhārata ||
sa tu dhairyeṇa taṃ kopaṃ saṃnivārya mahāyaśāḥ ||
śrutāyuṣaḥ praciccheda muṣṭideśe mahad dhanuḥ ||
athainaṃ chinnadhanvānaṃ nārācena stanāntare ||
nirbibheda raṇe rājā sarvasainyasya paśyataḥ ||
satvaraṃ caraṇe rājaṃs tasya vāhān mahātmanaḥ ||
nijaghāna śaraiḥ kṣipraṃ sūtaṃ ca sumahābalaḥ ||
hatāśvaṃ tu rathaṃ tyaktvā dṛṣṭvā rājñas tu pauruṣam ||
vipradudrāva vegena śrutāyuḥ samare tadā ||
tasmiñ jite maheṣvāse dharmaputreṇa saṃyuge ||
duryodhanabalaṃ rājan sarvam āsīt parāṅmukham ||
etat kṛtvā mahārāja dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
vyāttānano yathā kālas tava sainyaṃ jaghāna ha ||
Sanjaya said: "When the sun had reached its zenith, King Yudhishthira, seeing Shrutayush, drove his horses forward. Then the king charged Shrutayush, tamer of foes, striking him with nine sharp, well-formed arrows. But Shrutayush, a great archer, warded off in battle the seven arrows sent by the son of Dharma and returned them into the son of Kunti. They pierced his armor and in the fight drank blood from the body of that great soul, as if searching for his very life. The son of Pandu, heavily wounded by that great-souled king, pierced the king's heart in battle with a boar-eared arrow. Then with another broad-headed shaft, Partha, the finest of charioteers, swiftly cast down the banner of that great soul from his chariot to the ground. Seeing his banner fallen, King Shrutayush pierced the son of Pandu with seven sharp arrows, O king. Then Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, blazed up with wrath, like fire at the end of an age, ready to consume all creatures. Beholding the enraged son of Pandu, the gods, gandharvas, and rakshasas trembled, great king, and the world fell into confusion. In the minds of all beings this thought arose: 'This enraged king will burn the three worlds today.' Then the sages and the gods performed a great blessing for the peace of the worlds, as the son of Pandu had grown wrathful. Overcome by anger, licking the corners of his mouth, he assumed a terrible form, like the sun at the end of an age. Then all your armies, lord of men, lost all hope of life. But the greatly renowned Yudhishthira restrained this wrath with fortitude; he cut off Shrutayush's great bow at the grip, and then, before the eyes of the whole army, pierced him, now bowless, in the chest with a narachi arrow. Acting swiftly, the mighty son of Dharma slew with arrows the horses and charioteer of that great soul. Seeing the king's valor, Shrutayush abandoned his horseless chariot and fled swiftly from the battle. When that great archer had been vanquished by the son of Dharma, the whole army of Duryodhana, O king, turned back. Having done this, Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, began to strike down your army, like Time itself with jaws agape."
