संजय उवाच
विमुखीकृत्य तान् सर्वांस् तावकान् युधि राक्षसः ॥
जिघांसुर् भरतश्रेष्ठ दुर्योधनम् उपाद्रवत् ॥
तम् आपतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य राजानं प्रति वेगितम् ॥
अभ्यधावज् जिघांसन्तस् तावका युद्धदुर्मदाः ॥
तालमात्राणि चापानि विकर्षन्तो महाबलाः ॥
तम् एकम् अभ्यधावन्त नदन्तः सिंहसंघवत् ॥
अथैनं शरवर्षेण समन्तात् पर्यवारयन् ॥
पर्वतं वारिधाराभिः शरदीव बलाहकाः ॥
स गाढविद्धो व्यथितस् तोत्त्रार्दित इव द्विपः ॥
उत्पपात तदाकाशं समन्ताद् वैनतेयवत् ॥
व्यनदत् सुमहानादं जीमूत इव शारदः ॥
दिशः खं प्रदिशश् चैव नादयन् भैरवस्वनः ॥
राक्षसस्य तु तं शब्दं श्रुत्वा राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥
उवाच भरतश्रेष्ठो भीमसेनम् इदं वचः ॥
युध्यते राक्षसो नूनं धार्तराष्ट्रैर् महारथैः ॥
यथास्य श्रूयते शब्दो नदतो भैरवं स्वनम् ॥
अतिभारं च पश्यामि तत्र तात समाहितम् ॥
पितामहश् च संक्रुद्धः पाञ्चालान् हन्तुम् उद्यतः ॥
तेषां च रक्षणार्थाय युध्यते फल्गुनः परैः ॥
एतच् छ्रुत्वा महाबाहो कार्यद्वयम् उपस्थितम् ॥
गच्छ रक्षस्व हैडिम्बं संशयं परमं गतम् ॥

tam āpatantaṃ saṃprekṣya rājānaṃ prati vegitam ||
abhyadhāvaj jighāṃsantas tāvakā yuddhadurmadāḥ ||
tālamātrāṇi cāpāni vikarṣanto mahābalāḥ ||
tam ekam abhyadhāvanta nadantaḥ siṃhasaṃghavat ||
athainaṃ śaravarṣeṇa samantāt paryavārayan ||
parvataṃ vāridhārābhiḥ śaradīva balāhakāḥ ||
sa gāḍhaviddho vyathitas tottrārdita iva dvipaḥ ||
utpapāta tadākāśaṃ samantād vainateyavat ||
vyanadat sumahānādaṃ jīmūta iva śāradaḥ ||
diśaḥ khaṃ pradiśaś caiva nādayan bhairavasvanaḥ ||
rākṣasasya tu taṃ śabdaṃ śrutvā rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
uvāca bharataśreṣṭho bhīmasenam idaṃ vacaḥ ||
yudhyate rākṣaso nūnaṃ dhārtarāṣṭrair mahārathaiḥ ||
yathāsya śrūyate śabdo nadato bhairavaṃ svanam ||
atibhāraṃ ca paśyāmi tatra tāta samāhitam ||
pitāmahaś ca saṃkruddhaḥ pāñcālān hantum udyataḥ ||
teṣāṃ ca rakṣaṇārthāya yudhyate phalgunaḥ paraiḥ ||
etac chrutvā mahābāho kāryadvayam upasthitam ||
gaccha rakṣasva haiḍimbaṃ saṃśayaṃ paramaṃ gatam ||
Sanjaya said: ‘Having turned back all your warriors in battle, the rakshasa, wishing to kill Duryodhana, rushed upon him, O best of the Bharatas. Seeing him bearing down on the king, your men, maddened with battle-fury, ran at him, seeking to slay him. Mighty warriors, drawing bows as long as palm trees, rushed at him alone, roaring like a pride of lions. Then they covered him on every side with a rain of arrows, as autumn clouds cover a mountain with streams of water. Deeply pierced and tormented, like an elephant afflicted by the goad, he then leapt up into the sky like the son of Vinata, and let out a tremendous roar, like an autumn thundercloud, filling the quarters, the sky, and every direction with a terrible sound. Hearing this voice of the rakshasa, King Yudhishthira, best of the Bharatas, said these words to Bhimasena: “Surely the rakshasa is fighting the great chariot-warriors of Dhritarashtra’s sons: so his fearsome roar is heard. I see, dear one, that a grave danger is gathered there. And the grandfather Bhishma, in fury, is ready to slay the Panchalas, and to protect them Phalguna is fighting the enemy. Hearing this, mighty-armed one, understand: two tasks confront us. Go and protect Haidimba, who has fallen into the gravest peril.”’
