महता रथवंशेन पार्थस्यावारयन् दिशः ॥
तथैव भगदत्तश् च श्रुतायुश् च महाबलः ॥
गजानीकेन भीमस्य ताव् अवारयतां दिशः ॥
भूरिश्रवाः शलश् चैव सौबलश् च विशां पते ॥
शरौघैर् विविधैस् तूर्णं माद्रीपुत्राव् अवारयन् ॥

bhīṣmas tu sahitaḥ sarvair dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainikaiḥ ||
yudhiṣṭhiraṃ samāsādya sarvataḥ paryavārayat ||
Then King Duryodhana, and Kripa, the best of charioteers, Ashvatthaman, Shalya, Sudakshina the Kamboja, the Avantis Vinda and Anuvinda, and Bahlika with his own Bahlikas, barred every direction to Partha with a great array of chariots. In the same way Bhagadatta and the mighty Shrutayus, with a force of elephants, barred every direction to Bhima. Bhurishravas, Shala, and Saubala -- Shakuni, lord of the people -- swiftly held back the sons of Madri with manifold streams of arrows. Bhishma, together with all the soldiers of Dhritarashtra's son, came upon Yudhishthira and surrounded him on every side.
