अयं स दिवसस् तात यत्र पार्थो महारथः ॥
जिघांसुः समरे भीष्मं परं यत्नं करिष्यति ॥
उत्पतन्ति हि मे बाणा धनुः प्रस्फुरतीव मे ॥
योगम् अस्त्राणि गच्छन्ति क्रूरे मे वर्तते मतिः ॥
दिक्षु शान्तासु घोराणि व्याहरन्ति मृगद्विजाः ॥
नीचैर् गृध्रा निलीयन्ते भारतानां चमूं प्रति ॥
नष्टप्रभ इवादित्यः सर्वतो लोहिता दिशः ॥
रसते व्यथते भूमिर् अनुष्टनति वाहनम् ॥
कङ्का गृध्रा बलाकाश् च व्याहरन्ति मुहुर् मुहुः ॥
शिवाश् चाशिवनिर्घोषा वेदयन्त्यो महद् भयम् ॥
पपात महती चोल्का मध्येनादित्यमण्डलात् ॥
सकबन्धश् च परिघो भानुम् आवृत्य तिष्ठति ॥
परिवेषस् तथा घोरश् चन्द्रभास्करयोर् अभूत् ॥
वेदयानो भयं घोरं राज्ञां देहावकर्तनम् ॥
देवतायतनस्थाश् च कौरवेन्द्रस्य देवताः ॥
कम्पन्ते च हसन्ते च नृत्यन्ति च रुदन्ति च ॥
अपसव्यं ग्रहाश् चक्रुर् अलक्ष्माणं निशाकरम् ॥
अवाक्शिराश् च भगवान् उदतिष्ठत चन्द्रमाः ॥
वपूंषि च नरेन्द्राणां विगतानीव लक्षये ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैन्येषु न च भ्राजन्ति दंशिताः ॥
सेनयोर् उभयोश् चैव समन्ताच् छ्रूयते महान् ॥
पाञ्चजन्यस्य निर्घोषो गाण्डीवस्य च निस्वनः ॥

pariveṣas tathā ghoraś candrabhāskarayor abhūt ||
vedayāno bhayaṃ ghoraṃ rājñāṃ dehāvakartanam ||
devatāyatanasthāś ca kauravendrasya devatāḥ ||
kampante ca hasante ca nṛtyanti ca rudanti ca ||
apasavyaṃ grahāś cakrur alakṣmāṇaṃ niśākaram ||
avākśirāś ca bhagavān udatiṣṭhata candramāḥ ||
vapūṃṣi ca narendrāṇāṃ vigatānīva lakṣaye ||
dhārtarāṣṭrasya sainyeṣu na ca bhrājanti daṃśitāḥ ||
senayor ubhayoś caiva samantāc chrūyate mahān ||
pāñcajanyasya nirghoṣo gāṇḍīvasya ca nisvanaḥ ||
"My son, this is the day on which Partha the maharatha, desiring to slay Bhishma in battle, will make his utmost effort. My arrows leap up of themselves, my bow seems to tremble, the astras are ready to converge, and my mind has turned cruel. In the quiet quarters beasts and birds cry out fearfully; vultures descend low over the army of the Bharatas. The sun seems to have lost its brightness, all quarters have turned red, the earth roars and shudders, the beasts and mounts groan. Birds of prey, vultures, and cranes cry out again and again; jackals with their ill-omened howl proclaim a great terror. A great fiery meteor fell through the midst of the solar disc, and a ring girded with a dark band stands covering the sun. A dreadful halo has formed around the moon and the sun, foretelling a terrible danger — the cutting down of kings' bodies. The deities of the Kaurava lord, dwelling in their shrines, tremble, laugh, dance, and weep. The planets have turned leftward, and the moon has risen bowed down, without its auspicious mark. I see that the forms of the kings in the army of Dhritarashtra's son seem to have lost their splendor; even in their armor they do not shine. From both armies, on every side, is heard the great roar of the Panchajanya and the twang of the Gandiva."
