छित्त्वा धनूंषि वीराणां शरांश् च बहुधा रणे ॥

tatrādbhutam apaśyāma raṇe pārthasya vikramam ||
śaraiḥ saṃvārya tān vīrān nijaghāna balaṃ tava ||
Cutting through the bows of the heroes and their arrows in the fight, these two warriors struck down the heads of men by the hundred. Many chariots were shattered, hundreds of horses slain, and elephants together with their mahouts fell to the ground in the great battle. Chariot-warriors and horsemen, slain everywhere, could be seen, O king, writhing on every side. The earth was strewn with the slain hosts of elephants and foot-soldiers, with slaughtered horses and chariots shattered again and again. It was covered with parasols cut to pieces, fallen banners, discarded ankushas and elephant-trappings, O Bharata; with bracelets, armlets, necklaces, trampled deer-skins, discarded turbans and chamara fans; with arms anointed with sandal-paste and the thighs of kings scattered everywhere. There we beheld the wondrous valor of Partha in battle: having checked those heroes with his arrows, he began to destroy your army.'
