केकया धृष्टकेतुश् च मत्स्यपाञ्चालसृंजयाः ॥
पाण्डवाश् च मुदा युक्ता युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः ॥
अभ्यवर्तन्त सहिता द्रोणानीकं बिभित्सवः ॥

Watching with a smile the feat of the son of Subhadra, having seen the most bitter enemy, arrogant, now defeated — the sons of Draupadi, the great charioteer-warriors, bearing on the tops of their banners the images of Dharma, Vayu, Indra and the Ashvins, Satyaki and Chekitana, Dhrishtadyumna and Shikhandin, the Kekayas and Dhrishtaketu, the Matsyas, Panchalas and Srinjayas, and the Pandavas, filled with joy, with Yudhishthira at their head, advanced jointly against the array of Drona, eager to breach it.

The sons of Draupadi bear upon their banners the images of Dharma, Vayu, Indra and the Ashvins — the divine fathers of the five Pandavas: in their standards the heavenly kinship and protection overshadowing the righteous cause are made manifest. Roused by the boy's feat, all the ranks press forward after him. It is telling that beneath the banners of the gods the whole army of righteousness advances, united in a single surge. The verse teaches that a righteous cause is shadowed by higher powers, and the signs of the gods upon the banners visibly manifest that protection; that the feat of one inspires and unites many, turning the scattered into a single stream; and that an army marching beneath a divine standard and moved by the triumph of justice is formidable not by strength alone, but by the truth that stands behind it.
