भयं तु सुमहत् प्राप्तं धार्तराष्ट्रं महद् बलम् ॥
पार्थः पुत्रवधात् क्रुद्धः कौरवाञ् शोषयिष्यति ॥
क्षुद्रः क्षुद्रसहायश् च स्वपक्षक्षयम् आतुरः ॥
व्यक्तं दुर्योधनो दृष्ट्वा शोचन् हास्यति जीवितम् ॥
bhayaṃ tu sumahat prāptaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraṃ mahad balam ||
pārthaḥ putravadhāt kruddhaḥ kauravāñ śoṣayiṣyati ||
kṣudraḥ kṣudrasahāyaś ca svapakṣakṣayam āturaḥ ||
vyaktaṃ duryodhano dṛṣṭvā śocan hāsyati jīvitam ||
"A most great fear indeed has befallen the great host of Dhritarashtra: Partha, enraged by the killing of his son, will wither the Kauravas. Ignoble, with ignoble accomplices, stricken by the ruin of his own side, Duryodhana, evidently, beholding this, grieving, will lose his life."

Through his grief a prophetic clarity breaks through in Yudhishthira: the death of the boy will not go unanswered by his killers. "Pārthaḥ putravadhāt kruddhaḥ kauravān śoṣayiṣyati" — the father's wrath will "wither" the whole enemy camp; and so it will come to pass the next morning against Jayadratha. And Duryodhana is called "kṣudraḥ kṣudrasahāyaḥ", ignoble with his ignoble companions: lawlessness strips even a king of his name. It is telling that this foreknowledge comes from the mouth of one grieving, not one triumphant. The verse teaches that an unrighteous killing carries its own retribution within it, and that eyes purified by grief see this law more clearly than eyes blinded by victory.
