संजय उवाच
तस्मिंस् तु निहते वीरे सौभद्रे रथयूथपे ॥
विमुक्तरथसंनाहाः सर्वे निक्षिप्तकार्मुकाः ॥
उपोपविष्टा राजानं परिवार्य युधिष्ठिरम् ॥
तद् एव दुःखं ध्यायन्तः सौभद्रगतमानसाः ॥
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा विललाप सुदुःखितः ॥
अभिमन्यौ हते वीरे भ्रातुः पुत्रे महारथे ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
tasmiṃs tu nihate vīre saubhadre rathayūthape ||
vimuktarathasaṃnāhāḥ sarve nikṣiptakārmukāḥ ||
upopaviṣṭā rājānaṃ parivārya yudhiṣṭhiram ||
tad eva duḥkhaṃ dhyāyantaḥ saubhadragatamānasāḥ ||
tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ ||
abhimanyau hate vīre bhrātuḥ putre mahārathe ||
When that hero, the son of Subhadra, leader of the chariot-warriors, had been slain, all — having removed their battle harness and laid down their bows — sat down around king Yudhishthira, in mournful thought on that one sorrow alone, their minds fixed on Saubhadra. And then king Yudhishthira, overcome with grief, broke into weeping — at the fall of the hero Abhimanyu, the son of his brother, the great chariot-warrior.

The removed armor and set-aside bows speak louder than words: an army that all day strained toward battle now falls still around the king, held by a single thought. "Tat eva duḥkham dhyāyantaḥ", "brooding on that one sorrow", — grief has become the sole content of every soul. It is telling that the first to cry out is not the father or the mother but Yudhishthira, who sent the boy: the leader's grief is weighted with guilt. The verse teaches that a true loss halts the very motion of war, turning warriors into silent mourners.
