दुर्योधनं चाविधेयं बध्नीतेति पुरा यदि ॥
कुरून् अचोदयिष्यस् त्वं न त्वां व्यसनम् आव्रजेत् ॥
तत् ते बुद्धिव्यभीचारम् उपलप्स्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥
पाञ्चाला वृष्णयः सर्वे ये चान्ये ऽपि महाजनाः ॥

duryodhanaṃ cāvidheyaṃ badhnīteti purā yadi ||
kurūn acodayiṣyas tvaṃ na tvāṃ vyasanam āvrajet ||
tat te buddhivyabhīcāram upalapsyanti pāṇḍavāḥ ||
pāñcālā vṛṣṇayaḥ sarve ye cānye 'pi mahājanāḥ ||

"And [if] before you had urged the Kurus: 'Bind the unruly Duryodhana!' — misfortune would not have befallen you. That deviation of your mind will be recognized by the Pandavas, the Panchalas, the Vrishnis, all, and other great men as well."

Sanjaya names the fault by its own name: "buddhivyabhīcāram," "deviation of the mind" — Dhritarashtra knew what was right, but his mind swerved toward his son. And all see it: "upalapsyanti… mahājanāḥ," the noble will recognize it. It is telling that even the counsel to bind one's own son for the sake of dharma was the king's duty. The verse teaches that love for one's own does not exempt one from the duty to restrain him when he does evil: "buddhivyabhīcāra" — the betrayal of discernment for the sake of attachment — is the gravest fault of a ruler, and it will not escape the gaze of the righteous.
