स कृत्वा पितृकर्म त्वं पुत्रं संस्थाप्य सत्पथे ॥
वर्तेथा यदि धर्मेण न त्वां व्यसनम् आव्रजेत् ॥
त्वं तु प्राज्ञतमो लोके हित्वा धर्मं सनातनम् ॥
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेश् चान्वगा मतम् ॥
sa kṛtvā pitṛkarma tvaṃ putraṃ saṃsthāpya satpathe ||
vartethā yadi dharmeṇa na tvāṃ vyasanam āvrajet ||
tvaṃ tu prājñatamo loke hitvā dharmaṃ sanātanam ||
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneś cānvagā matam ||
"You, having performed the father's duty, having established your son on the good path, [if you] had acted according to dharma — misfortune would not have befallen you. But you, wisest in the world, having abandoned the eternal dharma, followed the opinion of Duryodhana, Karna, and Shakuni."

The sharpest denunciation lies in the contradiction: "prājñatamaḥ loke hitvā dharmaṃ sanātanam," "wisest in the world — abandoned the eternal dharma." His knowledge was highest, yet his choice was lowest. It is telling that Sanjaya does not deny Dhritarashtra's intelligence, but blames him the more heavily for it: the sin of the wise is graver than the sin of the ignorant. The verse teaches that wisdom without adherence to dharma is the gravest fault of all: the wisest, who rejected the eternal law for the counsel of passionate men, sins knowingly; and the greater the discernment given, the stricter the reckoning for its betrayal.
