तौ तु विद्ध्वा महाराज पाण्डवो निशितैः शरैः ॥
विद्रावयंस् तव चमूं शतशो व्यधमच् छरैः ॥
अनिलेन यथाभ्राणि विच्छिन्नानि समन्ततः ॥
विच्छिन्नानि तथा राजन् बलान्य् आसन् विशां पते ॥
तद् बलं भरतश्रेष्ठ वध्यमानं तथा निशि ॥
प्रदुद्राव दिशः सर्वा वीक्षमाणं भयार्दितम् ॥
उत्सृज्य वाहान् समरे चोदयन्तस् तथापरे ॥
संभ्रान्ताः पर्यधावन्त तस्मिंस् तमसि दारुणे ॥

vidrāvayaṃs tava camūṃ śataśo vyadhamac charaiḥ ||
anilena yathābhrāṇi vicchinnāni samantataḥ ||
vicchinnāni tathā rājan balāny āsan viśāṃ pate ||
tad balaṃ bharataśreṣṭha vadhyamānaṃ tathā niśi ||
pradudrāva diśaḥ sarvā vīkṣamāṇaṃ bhayārditam ||
utsṛjya vāhān samare codayantas tathāpare ||
saṃbhrāntāḥ paryadhāvanta tasmiṃs tamasi dāruṇe ||
Both, having mounted a single chariot, father and son, great warriors, showered Partha with arrows, like two clouds risen over a mountain. Having pierced those two, O great king, the Pandava with sharp arrows, putting your army to flight, struck it down by hundreds with arrows. As clouds are scattered everywhere by the wind, so, O king, were the armies scattered, O lord of peoples. That army, O best of the Bharatas, thus being slaughtered in the night, fled in all directions, looking about, torn by fear.

Father and son shower Arjuna 'like two clouds over a mountain,' but the mountain stands: the army scatters before him 'like clouds under the wind.' It is significant that even the combined assault of two is powerless before one who does not waver. The verse teaches that there is a steadfastness which no number or alliance of attackers can break: as a mountain does not shake beneath clouds, so one firm in spirit stands beneath any onslaught; and before his unshaken firmness the very storm of enemies is dispersed.
