तम् न्तं संप्रेक्ष्य विरूपाक्षं विभीणम्
त्स्मयन्न् राधेयस् त्वमाणो ऽभ्यवायत्
तः र्णो ऽभ्ययाद् नम् स्यन्न् स्यन्तम् न्तिकात्
माङ्ग माङ्गं यूर्ष र्षभम्
संनिपातस् तुमुलस् योर् सीद् विशां ते
र्णराक्षयो राजन्न् न्द्रम्बयोर्
तौ प्रगृह्य हावेगे नुषी भीनिस्वने
प्राच्छायेताम् न्योन्यं क्षमाणौ हेषुभिः

tam āpatantaṃ saṃprekṣya vikṣaṃ vibhīṣaṇam ||
utsmayann iva dheyas tvaraṇo 'bhyarayat ||
tataḥ karṇo 'bhyad enam asyann asyantam antikāt ||
taṅga iva taṅgaṃ tharṣabha ivarṣabham ||
sa saṃnitas tumulas tayor ād viśāṃ pate ||
karṇakṣasayo jann indraśambarayor iva ||
tau pragṛhya mavege dhanuṣī bhīmanisvane ||
prācchādayem anyonyaṃ takṣaṇau maheṣubhiḥ ||

Translation

Seeing him, Virupaksha [the fierce-eyed], terrible, swooping down, Radheya [Karna], as if smiling, swiftly repelled him. Then Karna advanced upon him, shooting at the one who shot, close at hand, as an elephant meets an elephant, as a herd-bull meets a bull. That tumultuous clash between the two, O lord of peoples, of Karna and the rakshasa, O king, was like that between Indra and Shambara. Both, seizing their swift, fiercely resounding bows, showered each other, cutting one another with great arrows.
