अस्माकं हि वनस्थानां हैडिम्बेन महात्मना ॥
बालेनापि सता तेन कृतं साह्यं जनार्दन ॥
अस्त्रहेतोर् गतं ज्ञात्वा पाण्डवं श्वेतवाहनम् ॥
असौ कृष्ण महेष्वासः काम्यके माम् उपस्थितः ॥
उषितश् च सहास्माभिर् यावन् नासीद् धनंजयः ॥

Yudhishthira justifies his grief by the highest dharma: to forget a kindness done is a sin equal to the slaying of a brahmin. It is telling that gratitude is placed among the foremost virtues. The verse teaches that ingratitude is the gravest of vices, for it betrays the very foundation of human bonds; and to remember good done, especially by one who served in time of need, is a duty inseparable from dharma -- and so grief for the faithful is not idle, but righteous.
