संजय उवाच
स सव्यसाची भीमेन चोदितः केशवेन च ॥
कर्णद्रोणाव् अतिक्रम्य समन्तात् पर्यवारयत् ॥
तम् आजिशीर्षम् आयान्तं दहन्तं क्षत्रियर्षभान् ॥
पराक्रान्तं पराक्रम्य यतन्तः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥
नाशक्नुवन् वारयितुं वर्धमानम् इवानलम् ॥
अथ दुर्योधनः कर्णः शकुनिश् चापि सौबलः ॥
अभ्यवर्षञ् शरव्रातैः कुन्तीपुत्रं धनंजयम् ॥
तेषाम् अस्त्राणि सर्वेषाम् उत्तमास्त्रविदां वरः ॥
कदर्थीकृत्य राजेन्द्र शरवर्षैर् अवाकिरत् ॥

tam ājiśīrṣam āyāntaṃ dahantaṃ kṣatriyarṣabhān ||

nāśaknuvan vārayituṃ vardhamānam ivānalam ||
atha duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniś cāpi saubalaḥ ||
abhyavarṣañ śaravrātaiḥ kuntīputraṃ dhanaṃjayam ||
teṣām astrāṇi sarveṣām uttamāstravidāṃ varaḥ ||
kadarthīkṛtya rājendra śaravarṣair avākirat ||
He, Savyasachin, urged by Bhima and by Keshava, passing by Karna and Drona, surrounded [the foes] from all sides. Him, who went into the forefront of battle, who was burning the bulls among kshatriyas, the valorous one, [themselves] displaying valor, straining, the bulls among kshatriyas could not stop, like a growing fire. Then Duryodhana, Karna, and Shakuni Saubala showered arrows in masses upon Kunti's son, Dhananjaya. The weapons of all of them, the best among the knowers of supreme weapons [parried]...

Arjuna, "like a growing fire," cannot be checked even by straining warriors: valor, once blazing, becomes unstoppable. Notable is the comparison to fire, which only grows stronger from resistance. The verse teaches that there is a strength which opposition only inflames further: the more obstacles, the brighter it burns; and one in whom such power has awakened is like a flame -- it cannot be quenched by a counter-effort, only fanned.
