Translation
«Of this knowledge of brahman of the great Garuḍa, the sage is Brahmā, the meter is gāyatrī, the deity is the Lord, great Garuḍa. The application in repetition is for the pleasure of the great Garuḍa and for the destruction of all poison in me».

The viniyoga, “application,” is given, and this whole apparatus was discussed reading the Hayagrīva (1.4); no need to repeat it. Note what it is for here: mama sakala-viṣa-vināśanārthe, “for the destruction of all poison in me.” That is, the mantra's purpose is stated without evasion and without spiritual cover: so that the poison does not kill.
This honesty, to my mind, is better than if the book pretended to be philosophical. Let us add what deserves saying about Garuḍa himself, for he is the subject of this book. Garuḍa is the son of Kaśyapa and Vinatā, king of birds and bearer of Viṣṇu; his story stands in the first book of the Mahābhārata and is one of the most vivid.
His mother Vinatā lost a wager to her sister Kadrū, mother of the serpents, and became her slave; and Garuḍa, to ransom his mother, won amṛta from the gods. Hence he is the enemy of serpents by birth, and this enmity is not invented for the charm, but taken from the story. Let us add what the Vaiṣṇava side says of him.
For it, he is the model of dāsya, “service”: one who bears the Lord upon himself; and in its temples his image is placed facing the entrance, looking toward the deity, for he always looks at the One he carries. This, to my mind, is the finest thing that can be said of him: his whole strength is turned beneath another's feet.
