Agni's withdrawal from the sacrificial order plunges all three worlds into calamity — a vivid image of how the cessation of yajna destroys the order of the cosmos. According to the Gita, sacrifice sustains the cycle that nourishes both gods and beings: "nourished by yajna, the gods will grant you what you desire." When the fire, the intermediary of sacrifice, withdraws, and even the sacred exclamations — "om," "svaha," "svadha" — fall silent, the life of the worlds comes to a standstill. Thus scripture shows how ruinous it is to breach the dharmic exchange between earth and heaven. It is significant, too, that in this distress the gods and sages resort not to force but to Brahma — the supreme arranger, a prefiguring of turning to the Lord to resolve the irresolvable. The true way out of the impasse into which a righteous curse has led is sought not in confrontation, but at the feet of the supreme master. Here is the principle: when dharma becomes entangled in contradictions, salvation lies in surrender to the supreme will, which alone reconciles the irreconcilable.
