Jaratkaru's consent reveals a perfect devotion to duty without abandoning his spiritual striving. Having vowed celibacy, he nonetheless takes upon himself the duty of family life — but for the sake of his ancestors, not for pleasure. His conditions are telling: his wife must bear his own name and be given as alms, for he, a destitute ascetic, seeks nothing for himself and will not pursue marriage by worldly means. Thus selflessness shows itself: even in fulfilling the duty to continue his line, he remains detached, accepting a wife "as alms" and with a single aim — the birth of a child who will deliver his ancestors. The purpose of marriage here is not sensual happiness but dharma and the liberation of the forefathers. This is a model of yukta-vairagya — detachment in action: one may fulfill a worldly duty without attachment to it, dedicating its fruit to a higher end. The prophecy of "a child for deliverance" points to Astika, whose birth will fulfill both the debt to the ancestors and the great task of saving the serpents.
