This chapter opens the tale of Garuda — the bearer of Lord Vishnu — through the story of Kashyapa’s two wives. Telling is the contrast between their wishes: Kadru asks for a thousand sons, Vinata for only two, but ones surpassing all others in strength. A subtle lesson lies here: what matters is not quantity but quality — not a multitude of the ordinary, but a few of the exalted. Vinata, mother of Aruna and Garuda, chooses the path of few but great sons, and one of them, Garuda, will become the eternal companion and mount (vahana) of the Lord Himself. In this way the scripture quietly teaches that the devotee seeks not an abundance of worldly goods but the one supreme thing — connection with the Lord. The tale itself is praised as ‘life-giving’ (ayushya): hearing of the deeds of the Lord and His devotees not only purifies but lengthens life, for hari-katha brings good to every being. Its transmission from mouth to mouth (father to Suta) again underscores the sanctity of parampara.
