Here Astika sets out on the feat of deliverance. His first act is telling: he removes from Vasuki the "fever of the mind" and takes it upon himself — an image of compassion bearing the burden of another's sorrow. Here is a foreshadowing of the righteous one's path: the deliverer carries the suffering of those he saves. Note too that Astika, stopped at the gate, neither grows angry nor forces his way, but praises the sacrifice — that is, he enters not by force but by courtesy and a word of respect. Thus he disarms resistance not with hostility but with goodwill; and in this is the wisdom of the gentle, who overcomes not by confrontation. The following chapter will present the very praise by which the young brahmin wins over the king and the whole assembly.
